Another Missing Episode Found!

Wow, this is fantastic news!

That being said, it's a pity they're two episodes from two not-so good serials. But here's hoping this will lead to discovery episodes from better serials in the near future.

Next month I was about to post a 'it's been 8 years since a missing episode discovery' thread. Thank god I don't have to now!

Galaxy 4:3 - This is great, our first proper look at a Rill, and it will be the last known episode in existence to feature Vicki.

The Underwater Menace 2 - This now becomes the earliest surviving Troughton episode.

Still hoping for an episode of Power of the Daleks or Mission to the Unknown before I die but I'm happy with any find.

From some of the hints being dropped it could be the Xmas Day episode from "The Daleks Master Plan".

But that was never transferred to film, so highly unlikely we'll ever find it.

But there's still the chance of some form of off-air recording. Not videotape, obviously, but there were home kinescoping kits at one time, or someone could have simply pointed an 8mm camera at the screen. We have the soundtrack, so if something like that ever turned up (I'm hoping someone in Canada decided to do that when Marco Polo aired here in 1965) the Feast of Steven episode could be recreated. We also don't know (unless this is confirmed otherwise in Telos' Wiped book) if a film copy wasn't made anyway, for reference or whatever.

A decade or so ago we had Ian Levine go on camera and say there would likely never be any more missing episodes found. Yet now we have two impossibilities that have come true (I'm sure Levine is not complaining about being proven wrong several times since he made his statement) - and I'm fascinated by that statement in the Radio Times about leads being followed. If I were a betting man I'd put a few bucks down on more missing episodes being recovered before the 50th anniversary.

Levine's comments were borne out of wanting to annoy the universe so much it shook and a missing episode fell out - and since he said that we've had four!

I mean, it's contagious. Look what Paul Vanezis wrote on August 25th of this year on missing-episodes.com:

Hi all,

Yesterday (Thursday) I travelled down to visit a family in Essex who contacted the BBC via the Treasure Hunt website. They bought a house in the country 8 months ago which featured in the grounds a makeshift cinema, complete with projectors and reels of film. One of the films was a Doctor Who and from their description of the first few feet of film, it featured the first title sequence.

Myself and Steve Roberts examined the film which turned out to be 'Conspiracy', the third episode of 'The Romans'. Nevertheless, it proves that despite what we think is a lot of publicity, people of a certain age just don't know what they have and in this case, the enthusiast film collector had been dead for ten years and his wife suffered from Alzheimers.

I'm sure that one or two more episodes will turn up in the hands of private collectors who simply don't know the value of what they have, or will be re-discovered by others who come into new ownership of such material.

Regards,

Paul

Cool news. I don't really know much about The Underwater Menace, though I did read the novelization of Galaxy 4. Still, great to hear all the same.

Excuse me! "Galaxy 4" inspired the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band's song "Beautiful Zelda." Now we can see just what it was about "Galaxy 4" that prompted Neil Innes to write a song about it. :)

Having an episode from Galaxy 4 - something which up till now has had no episodes in existence - is a great find.

At the other end of the scale, The Underwater Menace 2 has The Underwater Menace 3 for company - I'd rather it was something from say The Smugglers, The Power of the Daleks, The Highlanders or The Macra Terror; IE a story which doesn't have anything else in existence. Not to say I'm knocking a missing episode find (still can't believe it), just that if I had a preferred find from that season I'd go with one of the four that have nothing.

I'm a Who fan, I'm allowed to be bitchy.

Hey I'm not gonna complain. I'll take havign anything back we can get.

Here's hoping if we make enough of a fuss over the news it'll encourage collectors to have another look in their basements or attics.

Nice to see these finds. As others have said, shame they don't actually complete a serial but still, good finds.

Wow, I'm extremely happily surprised. I really didn't expect more to be found at this point. It's amazing how long these things can stay hidden. To have 2 found at once is amazing! Any finds are miracles at this point!

And since these are the first episodes recovered since the series returned, and the first time since the major push for mainstream American awareness, it's getting a bit of press in the US:

http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2011/12/doctor-who-missing-episodes-found.html

In the comments someone says this was "almost predicted" in last week's episode of Community. Anyone see that - did "Inspector Spacetime" make a return appearance or something?

CNN also covered it:

http://www.cnn.com/2011/12/12/showbiz/uk-dr-who/

Edit: New York Times now, too. This increased awareness of missing episodes is a good thing as it might inspire some ex-pat in Akron to check that steamer trunk he brought with him when he immigrated back in 1968 ...
