Anomalies in fandom

Doohan was just pissed because it was a great scene for him. The whole "nephew" bit was clunky, but leaving it in would have explained some of the emotional beats back then.

The theatrical version had a problem with Scotty being so hugely attached to a younger man for no apparent reason. But I still prefer it to a longer cut with a bunch of cringes put back in.

No apparent reason? The kid, younger than most, worked in engineering!

When I first saw WOK I thought that Preston looked way too young to be in Starfleet , until i recoognized Ike Eisenmann and calculated he should have been about 19. The novelization and my copy of the script both describe Preston as being 14, making me wonder what age Preston was supposed to be in the movie..

Was it in the novel that Peter Preston was announced as Scotty's nephew or was it just fan speculation?

If there's a scene they should have changed/cut, it's Scotty showing up on the Bridge first, carrying the body of his injured nephew. I mean you'd think he'd want to go DIRECTLY to Sickbay.
I took that as Scotty telling the bridge crew: Look what you've done!

I took it as a terrible show business moment that made no sense in-universe. The reality is, medics would come to Engineering with stretchers or gurneys and take the wounded to Sickbay. The Chief Engineer wouldn't be carrying a wounded man around in his arms under any circumstances. He'd be too busy saving the ship.

I remember reading something somewhere about the turbolift being called up to the bridge for some reason even though Scotty was trying to go to sickbay. Ship systems might not have been working right because of the damage.

I get the shock value of it, but would it have really killed the momentum if they had Kirk and Spock step out of the turbo lift in engineering the meeting Scotty as he's stepping in with Preston? We wouldn't have had to see the entire elevator ride...

Grief can make people do funny things. And the damage inflicted by Reliant may have caused the turbolifts to malfunction. When Kirk returned from Regula the turbolifts were inoperable below C deck (according to the cut dialog reinserted in the ABC network airing).

Yes. Or at least telling the audience.

True, and Saavik wouldn't be so visibly shocked.
Those moments are the reasons why I don't like WoK that much - it's too theatrical. Drama over logic.

The novelization reveals a close, platonic tutor/student relationship between Saavik and Preston. The novel also said Saavik was half-Romulan found by Spock when she was an orphan on the planet Hellguard. This explains her emotional response in the Kobyashi Maru and at seeing Peter's burned body.

She also tore apart an (otherwise unoccupied) room in a fit of grieving rage over Preston's death, giving into her Romulan heritage. (In McIntyre's novelization, I mean.)

It wasn't just in the novel, Saavik was half Romulan throughout the entire script and there were deleted scenes that were shot that state that specifically . One of which is easily located on YouTube. Her emotional reactions weren't just in that one scene they were in the entire movie in case you weren't looking closely

There was a line filmed referring to Saavik's half-Romulan admixture, or something like that. I'm not sure if it was ever put into any cut of the movie. I remember seeing some grainy footage of it on Youtube.

It was in the work print with just about every other deleted line from the script.
If you find a script online at places like trekcore and you read it and see a line you don't recognize there is about a 95% chance that it was in the work print.
Meyer shot his script -- just about every single line.
Then in the novelization Vonda McIntyre added some more bits about mostly the space station regula sttaff and the earlier mentioned Saavik Peter Preston friendship

That's in the theatrical release. What's cut out is most of what follows as Kirk, Spock and company return to the bridge.

Maybe Scotty knew that Preston was already dead and so carried him up to the bridge to show Kirk the devastating results that come from engaging in warfare?

Yeah, I doubt that Scotty was running up to teach Kirk a lesson...one that he was already aware of...with his dying nephew in his arms. And Kirk didn’t start the fight... in fact he had his ass handed to him because he wasn’t prepared.

Didn’t the novel say the turbolift was prioritized to go to the bridge at that moment and Scotty was dragged along for the ride? If it wasn’t, I read that idea somewhere.
