Angelus instead of Spike (Buffy)

Let's say Spike never came back from leaving Sunnydale to get back together with Drusilla in Season 3 and when Angel returned from Hell that season, it wasn't Angel who returned but Angelus. Do you think he could taken up Spike's arc from Season 4 to Season 7? Do you think with Angelus, the arc as well as a relationship between Buffy and Angelus would have been darker or twisted? Let's not forget that both Spike and Angelus are mass murderers and have done their share of torturing and tormenting innocents.

Spike killed 2 slayers before coming to Sunnydale...how man did Angelus kill? I never liked Angel all that much and wouldn't have enjoyed BtVS if Spike hadn't returned.

Yeah, he killed two slayers but that doesn't mean he killed only two people. Just that two of the innocent people he has killed were slayers.

You missed what I was saying...Spike killing 2 slayers seemed like a big deal...meaning he is a force to be reckoned with.

Spike was a puppy compared to Angelus. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time when he killed those Slayers.

So would that mean Angelus would have been the one with the chip in his head? Because that's the only way I'd see him sticking around like Spike did.
Not that I'd want to see that story mind. Angel was much better on his own show than on Buffy and Spike just has way more entertainment value. Full stop.

After what Angelus did to Jenny Calender, I can't believe anyone would take him seriously as a genuine love interest.

I think Spike was a far far more interesting character. Considering that even before he got a soul in Season 7 - he wasn't the psycho-Silence of the Lambs-twisted depraved evil genius vampire like Angelus. Spike was more of a brute and slightly more juvenile in his approaches... sometimes. BUT Spike was a bit more... I dunno... romantic than Angelus. And maybe slightly more feelings driven than simply impulse. "I don't feel like killing tonight... " hell first thing he did after being sired was to sire his mother.

And Angel Season 5 really kinda drove home the differences between Angel and Spike.

Angelus would have been dust by the end of S3. As Angelus, he was an out of control psychotic killer. It is ironic that in the beginning of his relationship with Spike, he was the ration cool headed one (still evil of course). By the time of their reuniting, Spike could see through Angel's quest to destroy the world as an act of utter madness for world vampiry. He understood the principles of supply and demand. Why bring larger and more powerful beasts to compete for your food supply? Druscilla was simply a child like raving lunatic who only saw things in the short term. She had a few moments of clarity... but they were far in between. I'm glad Spike came back. He doesn't have the blood of Miss Calander on his hands. He's also fun to beat up and kick around:evil:. Cobra

I think it would have been an interesting idea to have kept Angelus around a lot longer in Angel season four. They could even have made him the resident villain of the show (instead of Evil Cordelia), perhaps bringing Spike on a bit earlier as a surrogate hero.

I always thought that Spike had more layers. It seemed like the show runners strived to make Angel more nuanced whereas Spike just exuded complexity on his own. He could be rational, irrational, emotional and funny. Let us not forget funny. Therefore, Spike always rates higher in my book.

Yeah as much as I'm an Angelus fan I think Spike proved to be a far more complex and interesting character which is probably why Joss wanted to use him so much including having him as a love interest/sex buddy for Buffy. Angelus was a lot more ruthless and cunning but Spike had the layers...

My sister just bought me a best of Spike DVD. I was ranting about how Spike was a much better vampire/leading man than Edward of Twilight just to get her goat and she bought me the DVD. It was a nice suprise.

I am having so much fun with it. I am tempted to get the series just for Spike.

I agree. Angel was supposed to be a hero, yet he betrayed all of his friends at one time or another. He moped around so much about his past while Spike realized it was his demon who caused all the murder and mayhem and he didn't waste a lot of time wallowing in recriminations. Definitely more fun with the bon mots. "Spike, what are you doing out here in 5 words or less?" "Out for a walk, bitch"

No, they could never have forgiven Angelus for killing Jenny. Besides, Spike was always much more human than other vamps, possibly because Dru's link with the PTB's help those she sires to retain some of their old selves?

To quote my wife: "Angel was good out of necessity. Angelus was pure evil and loved it. Spike chose to rise above what he was, to 'conquer' his demons as it was. The arc wouldn't have worked with a neutered Angelus. Not the same."
