Angelina Jolie as Kay Scarpetta? WTF??

OK, I was a fan of Cornwell for some time, but lost interest in her books. I'm interested in seeing a film franchise based however loosely on the books.

But Angelina Jolie??? Yes I'm a fan and will watch pretty much whatever she's in, but is she the right actress to play an Italian-American forensic pathologist/coroner?

I always envisaged Scarpetta as a gaunt 50-something with an interesting collection of neuroses.

Joie's far too young. Otherwise bang on.

I think Jolie has the range that she could do it. Make-up would handle the age issue (and she's said she wants to move away from the sexy Wanted/Lara Croft-style roles anyway; seeing her playing a neurotic 50-year-old could be fun). I didn't think she could pull off Lara Croft, but she managed. She also remains my first choice if they ever make a Modesty Blaise movie.

Wouldn't be the first time a literary character has been made sexier for the screen. Susan Calvin in Asimov's robot stories was an unattractive, antisocial middle-aged woman, but they made her Bridget Moynihan in the I, Robot movie. The hero of the story Total Recall was based on was a dumpy milquetoast named Quail, but they renamed him Quaid and made him Arnold Schwarzenegger. Oh, and Emma Watson's a lot prettier than the books' Hermione Granger.

I haven't read a Scarpetta novel in ages, but I think Jolie will be good in the role. She's younger than Scarpetta is in the books now, but how old was Scarpetta in the first one?

Forty-ish, I'd guess? I don't recall whether it was ever stated, but that ought to be within reach.

Niece Lucy was still a child in the early books and I think early/mid twenties in the later ones, so that role wouldn't really be a good fit for Jolie at 34.
