Angel 10th Anniversary!

Such a great show and so sorely missed. I didn't start watching it until it had been on the air for a while (also didn't get into Buffy for a couple of years) but once I did, I was hooked and devoured S.1 from the start.

The scary thing is that while I didn't watch it at the outset, I do remember reading about it in SFX magazine shortly before it aired. It's really hard to believe 10 years have passed since then! Eeek!

Man, there's quite a few 10th anniversaries going on at the minute for some of my all time favourite things (Spaced and Homeworld just had their's). Tis a good month for nostalgia.

It's been a while since I last saw an episode of Angel though, gonna pick one at random and watch it tomorrow night. Fingers crossed for a good'un.

Since "She" was really the only bad episode they ever did, you have over a 99% chance of picking "a good'un."

I'm one of the few geeks I know who actually got into "Angel" before "Buffy". I knew it was a spin-off, but the premise of a character looking for redemption appealed to me more than Buffy's (though I later grew to enjoy that series immensely as well).

I remember seeing a few scattered episodes from the 1st 3 seasons of Buffy when it was first on the WB but I wasn't a regular viewer. Then I kinda dropped out of the franchise until Angel Season 3. I was insanely devoted during Angel Seasons 4 & 5 and became equally devoted to the DVDs of Seasons 1 & 2. But when I tried to backtrack and get back into Buffy, that was harder, particularly since the then current season of Buffy was Season 6. Damn, that sucked. But eventually I got the DVDs of Buffy Seasons 1-3 to catch up on Cordelia's & Angel's backstory. Now, I've come to greatly enjoy Buffy Seasons 1-4. Season 5 has its moments. I just try to pretend that Seasons 6 & 7 didn't happen as much as I can (except where those events are crucial to the concurrent storylines on Angel).

Conner was just a bad frakking idea.
I would argue that the casting of Conner was a bad idea, but I liked the idea of the character. Vincent Karthesier (or whatever his name is) was just not very good.

I think the actor is good. The character was just too whiny and took up too much screentime. I didn't really start sympathizing with him until his meltdown in the church in "Peace Out." By then, it was kinda too little too late.

I liked Conner a lot in Season 3 when he was still kind of a villain (him dumping Angel in the water in the season finale was an awesome cliffhanger), but he definitely got whiny in Season 4 with his Cordelia "romance."

It's very obvious from his performance in Mad Men that Vincent Kartheiser is a superb actor. So any criticisms people may have with Conner should be put down to the writing or character. Check out his Pete Campbell in Mad Men if you don't believe me.

I think I just don't like his face. He looks like he still has his baby teeth.

I've just read Angel: Aftermath too. I think there's some fantastic moments, and the canvas is bigger since there's no budget concerns, but I really miss the character that the actors bring to the roles.
The Aftermath story is pretty much universally regarded as dog crap by the fans. I got the first two (of 5) issues and thought everything about it was terrible.
I would however highly recommend the post 'Not Fade Away' Angel: After The Fall to any Angel fans. It is now complete & collected in 4 TPBs, plus the prequel Spike: After The Fall
The art in some of the middle issues isn't overly amazing, but the story is awesome.

I did mean the post series comics in general, not just Aftermath.

I just finished reading the "After the Hall" comics, and while I more or less enjoyed it, I found some of it incredibly confusing. A lot of the panels made the story hard to follow.

Maybe I'm just not used to reading comics.

I agree, sometimes it was difficult to follow, not to the point of not understanding the story, but occasionally jarring.

Here's a pic of the TPBs for anyone wondering what to look for (and it looks pretty)

Out of curiosity, when did everybody read "Spike: After the Fall?" I read it after "First Night." I don't remember why, but somebody told me to do that.

Well the original comic release dates were like this-
Angel- #10
Spike- #1
Spike- #2
Angel- #11
Angel- #12
Spike- #3
Angel- #13
Spike- #4
Angel- #14 onwards

Spike ATF is a prequel to Angel ATF, but like the First Night issues (6-8) it shouldn't be read before first time round. Information relating to the concurrent issues of Angel are also given in the issues of Spike (such as the whys of Angel's dragons name, and most importantly about Illyria/Fred)
Who we see in A-ATF keeps alternating from Illyria to Fred personas and vice versa, leading Team-Angel to wonder if there's some of Fred still left alive in Illyria. But its not till S-ATF #4 where its fully revealed that there is nothing left of Fred, that there is nothing human inside Illyria, the personas been merely the result of Hell-A

So I'd say prob read the Spike story around Angel #11/12 or so.

Well the TPBs/Hardcovers are made up of-
Vol 1- #1-5
Vol 2- #6-8
Vol 3- #9-12
Vol 4- #13-17
Spike- #1-4

Heh, haven't watched it yet, but it'll be particularly good I think.

Got my brother to pick a random number between 1-5 and then between 1-22, without giving him context. He picked 2 and 16. :D

Off the top of my head, I'm guessing that probably has something to do with Darla. I hope I'm right because all her episodes were awesome.

2x16 is "Epiphiny", right after Angel bangs Darla and then has a... well, epiphiny. He puts an end to his recent dark behaviour and rejoins the rest of the team.

I've been enjoying the After the Fall comics, but I admit that I too occasionally find them hard to follow. Nothing major, but just a few plot points that don't really seem as fleshed out as they could be... and sometimes the action is a little confusing.

I recently read the Aftermath hardcover collection, and I didn't find it to be as bad as Ethros apparently did. It wasn't as deep, dark, and heavy as ATF, but I think we needed a bit of a break from that anyway. I will agree that some things felt out of place, like the presence of actual angels... didn't seem like a good fit for the Buffyverse, IMO. Angel dealing with his newfound fame is kind of interesting, and funny at times, though.

So, ten years since the show premiered, eh? Man, how time flies. I remember watching the first episode when it aired, being mostly impressed, but unsure if I'd ever take to the show the way I had Buffy. I was quite pleasantly surprised to find myself actually preferring it to its predecessor in the later seasons... even more surprised to find myself liking the character of Wesley, who I thought was an annoying twit on Buffy. So thanks, Joss and co., for exceeding my expectations and creating a terrific and memorable show.

One of the best shows of all time and despite having one more season left in it, the ending we got made will make it live on in a greater form than any season 6 finale prob would of done.
