ANDREW PROBERT CONSPIRACY CONCEPT PAINTING -not for the faint hearted!

Botany Bay

Hi there Next Gen fans.

Found this on Ebay - a concept painting from Conspiracy - one of my all time favourite TNG episodes.

How did something this graphic make it to air?

Andy, was it just a coincidence, or were you trying to suggest that the Ferengi were involved in this "hostile takeover," given the resemblance of the parasite's maw to the Ferengi Marauder?

Re: ANDREW PROBERT CONSPIRACY CONCEPT PAINTING -not for the faint hear

Now thats why we need TNG remastered :)

In 88, that was big time f/x. That scene even won an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Makeup for a Series. Not as impressive these days, but not to bad for 21 years ago.

Probert for the win, as always.

The Conspiracy "bugs" are one of the best one off aliens in TNG. Thankfully, unlike a certain other race that started out cool and took a turn for the lame that will not be name, they were a one off race and there's so much mystery about them.

That's always something that puzzled me about "Conspiracy" — when they phaser open Remmick's chest and you see the 'mother' in there, she's basically filled up his entire chest cavity. All the usual organs — heart, lungs, stomach, liver — are missing in action. How did Remmick not only stay alive, but not look like a zombie, what with the lack of a functioning respiratory, circulatory, and digestive system?

'cause remember, kids. Star Trek has always been hard sci-fi and has VERY closely followed real science/biology/etc.

Because it was a syndicated show. No censors.

That's a good point.

But they never pushed things this far ever again. In fact they usually went out of their way not to shock or offend anyone.

Anyway, it's a great episode, and I'm surprised they never followed up on it.

Andrew Probert is amazing.

He was directly responsible for the Galaxy Class design, which is the best looking Trek ship in existence (and I dare say the best looking Sci-Fi ship in existence).

And he had a hand in the design of the Back to the Future Delorean, and Airwolf :)

I hear they do wonders for the body.

Interesting observation,... but no, that design was was to reflect a direct kinsmen-ship to the look of the parasitical little guys you see in this sketch:

Their 'U'-shaped maw was to be attached around the host brain stem. When Producer Berman had the mother's look changed (?) however, that visual connection was lost. Also in this page is my preliminary thumbnail sketch for the larger final.

You know, it's funny... I JUST watched this episode on Sunday and I saw those things and IMMEDIATELY thought of that Nero used on Pike in the new movie... I wonder if there was any connection or allusion too them... heck of a coincidence!

Re: ANDREW PROBERT CONSPIRACY CONCEPT PAINTING -not for the faint hear

Extremely bitchin'. And yeah, I always noticed how the mature queen looked nothing like her offspring, but figured it was a larva-adult thing. I think the more similar look would've been an improvement, but I cannot fault the episode for having one of if not the awesomest scene in Star Trek history.

Re: ANDREW PROBERT CONSPIRACY CONCEPT PAINTING -not for the faint hear

I remember these concept drawings, they were in the Art of Star Trek book. Great stuff.

Re: ANDREW PROBERT CONSPIRACY CONCEPT PAINTING -not for the faint hear

I think the worms Nero used on Pike were a reference to Wrath of Khan. Didn't he say they were "Alpha worms" or something?

As for the Mother parasite, I have to wonder how the heck something that big got inside Remmick to begin with. Was it smaller at first and grew bigger to the point it devoured his innards? Was it like the bug from Men in Black?

I remember when I first saw that as a kid it gave me nightmares that night.

You know, I was thinking the same thing. The way they entered the body (through the mouth), how they attached to the person's brain stem...

Actually, those 'bugs' were from Ceti Alpha... so Nero called them 'cetian' or something like that. Liked the tie in to WoK and the new movie
