News And the Next Animated Reconstruction is...

The unreality of this animation style might actually work in the story's favor. They've got a lot of room to make it more surreal than the original sets would have been and the initial void with all the TV screens certainly shows the potential.

It does have sort of a Lewis-Carroll-meets-Rankin-Bass quality, but it's still rather crude-looking.

I agree the crude animation could work in its favor. However, I'm not a fan of how the facial expressions don't match the articulation of the characters, particularly The Toymaker's pontificating at the end.

Oh, man. This is not good. This is not good at all.

I'll just say it: 3D animation and missing episode of DW don't mix. This looks horrendous and totally takes me out of the story.

Makes me wish that fan who created fan-animation of the first episode all by himself was doing the other missing episodes as well. It'd certainly be my animation of choice. But this? Forget it, I'm not buying.

I guess that the animation fits the story theme because it kind of makes the characters look like toys, but its definitely got problems, especially with characters emoting. Its bettwer to have a missing episode animated in some form then to not have it, but that might be the ugliest official Dr. Who animation that I'm aware of.

But his was 3D too?

I wouldn't put that down to 3D animation in general and more just to this particular style. Something less caricatured, and frankly better-made, could work all right. I generally prefer 2D, but there are some cel-shaded 3D shows these days that look almost as good, like The Dragon Prince and the ULTRAMAN anime.

Seconding 2D animations as well. The 3D ones seem to be a bit "off", though Toymaker's is easily the best of this new style so far. Partly because of the surreal other-universely nature of the plot.

2D here also. Not just because I prefer it. Just for consistency with other reconstructed episodes.

Years ago I thought that Mind Robber and a recovered Toymaker should be part colourised. Reality in colour, rest in black and white.

I thought you were going to suggest the opposite, a la The Wizard of Oz. I mean, it seems a waste not to use color for the more fanciful visuals.
