And the children shall lead

It would also have been nice if the cast had dialed it back some in spots.
It would also have been nice if Melvin Belli hadn't been in it. I was 17 or 18 when it aired, and my reaction then was "wtf is he doing on this show?!"

Belli was Freiberger's idea as he was looking for a way to generate some buzz for the show. But it was certainly ill-conceived and no one could talk him out of it. I don't believe he ever tried that kind of stunt casting again, at least for TOS.

Apparently some of the regular cast also objected on the grounds they felt there were more than enough qualified actors available who would be only too happy for the work and certainly able to do a better job than Melvin Belli.

I thought The Alternative Factor was the worst, but that changed after seeing this. I'd rather watch A Night in Sickbay ten times. Anyone who says Spock's Brain is the show's worst episode has no idea what they're talking about.

The most WTF part of this episode was Kirk beaming some redshirts into space, because he assumed they were still in orbit. He wasn't even under the influence of the kids. That should have been a court martial offense for negligence.

Sulu did take them out of orbit, yes. But Kirk wasn't under any influence and killed those redshirts because he didn't confirm the coordinates or check with the away team already down there first.

Belli was Freiberger's idea...
I've always imagined a scenario something like this:

Joe, alleged friend of Freiberger: "Sorry, Fred, but I'm gonna have to beg off your cocktail party this Friday. I've been invited to a party at Melvin Belli's house on the same night. I know you'll understand. After all, Belli is a celebrated attorney. A man of impeccable taste and dignity. While you, no offense, Fred, are just a TV producer, let's face it."
Freiberger: "Melvin Belli, eh? Tell you what, Joe. You willing to put your money where your mouth is? I'll bet you a thousand bucks I can get your "tasteful" and "dignified" Melvin Belli to appear on national television wearing nothing but a shower curtain!"

:D

Probably throw a chunk of blame at the transporter operator himself.

it does seem strange too that you would beam two people up without basically "warning them" first.

:)

I always wondered why the transporter did not have some sort of safety interlock, along the lines of "requested coordinates out of range". And not being under any sort of influence, why Kirk would have ignored that. A transporter I designed would certainly have that. :)

If the transporter operator was under the children's control, that scene would make more sense. But why control him?

:)

I was about to say, to make him see false readings. But the children caused people to visualize fears. So he would probably think the controls were giving false readings or beaming aboard something horrible, and he'd be trying to keep people away from the controls.

^The children only caused people to visualize fears, or "Beasts", when they didn't go along with their previous manipulations. Remember, they got Sulu to take them out of orbit without realizing he had done so. Thus, they make people see visions and carry out actions without self-awareness of them, and then attack them with their "Beast" when they reject the false imagery and memories.
