No, the wings don't need to come off. It's the same process they used to load it onto the 747. This isn't rocket science, guys ;)
 
One big difference between the Intrepid and the SCA 747. The SCA isn't surrounded by water and other obstructions.
As for Endeavour. I looked at LA on Bing Maps. And the nearest airport is LAX. That's a long-ass tow through the streets of downtown LA to the Technology Center by the LA Coliseum. The shuttle's got wings and a high tail.
 
That's what I'm afraid is going to happen to the Endeavour. It's going to have to be towed to it's destination in LA through the streets. She should have gone to the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
It's not that far of a drive from LAX, and I imagine it will be a highly publicized event. They'll likely take it straight up the 110 freeway, and one of the lanes will need to be shut down for the day. Not like LA can't handle it (with proper planning, of course), since the Carpocalypse went smoother than people anticipated.
