Great moment today in NY as the Enterprise flew by my office, over the Hudson and onto JFK. Will be posting pics shortly.

New York welcomes the Enterprise!

I have an exclusive photo of the flight:

Deputy Administrator Lori Garver took a picture with Leonard Nimoy while waiting on the tarmac for Enterprise's arrival in NYC.

Love it! Having issues posting pics, but put them up on Mike and Denise Okuda's FB page to share.

Great day here in NY.

Another fine example of class from Mr. Nimoy. I think it is magnificent that he was there for this occasion.

These pictures are great. So wish I had been able to be there. Does anyone know how permanently the Enterprise will be on exhibit in NYC?

There are degrees of permanence? I thought it was an absolute. ;)

The phrase "permanent display" doesn't mean it'll be there forever; rather, it's not a limited run with a set expiration date. Sometimes, something on "permanent display" is retired or moved elsewhere or removed for restorations, et cetera.

;)

Haha, Green Shirt, touché. :p But yeah, Frontier got what I was asking. Does anyone know long how the Enterprise is supposed to be in NYC?

Forever, its new home will be on the Intrepid, and then hopefully in a new pavilion they want to build across the street (west side highway). One of the terms of getting the Enterprise was that it will be enclosed in a structure, so they are building a cover for the flight deck of Intrepid.

Can someone tell me how in the hell they're going to get the Enterprise onto the flight deck of the Intrepid? I was over at Nasa.gov reading on how they off-loaded Discovery and loaded Enterprise onto the SCA at Dulles. It took two huge heavy-lift cranes and four separate guide lines just to do a straight simple vertical pick.
Enterprise is going to be brought alongside on a barge and then lifted and then translated ove to the flightdeck. And is the flightdeck strong enough to handle Enterprise? I've been onboard Intrepid's sister, the Lexington in Corpus Christi, and the flight deck is steel sheathed wooden planks on the original part of the flightdeck.

Probably more than adequate given that IIRC, in its empty (no engines) stripped down mode a shuttle orbiter weights less than 75 tons or so. Or about twice as much as the heaviest carrier born aircraft.

Recovering an orbiter from overseas after an abort by aircraft carrier was widely considered a possible option.

According to a Nasa exec, they are sending transporting the crane set up from DC to NY over the next few weeks, and will transport the Enterprise via barge from JFK to the pier where Intrepid is docked.

That's what I'm afraid is going to happen to the Endeavour. It's going to have to be towed to it's destination in LA through the streets. She should have gone to the Johnson Space Center in Houston. LA can have the silly mockup that used to be displayed at the KSC Visitors Center.
As for Enterprise; I guess they can build some sort of platform on Intrepid's flight deck to spread out the loading from Enterprise's landing gear.
