Assuming that the half-sisters got their father's name (Western chauvinism, I know)

We know that in the case of Spock, that Spock isn't his family name, the family name being supposedly unpronounceable by most Humans.

But it seems that Saavik I was a captain-in-training, whereas Saavik II was science officer material.

Just as with Mr. Chekov (a young officer on his way up), Mr. Saavik 1 was stationed at the traditional navigator's console. Chekov/Saavik could operate the science station, but it wasn't their primary assignment.
