An open challenge

When I got my BA in Geography in 1972 I might have done okay. Not having used it beyond watching the news...not even going to try. can't spell and typing under time pressure...not a good deal.

I got 122. Did pretty well in Europe, Asia and the Western Hemisphere, but I really blanked out on West Africa and the South Pacific.

Completely forgot about the Caribbeans, and I'm mad at myself that I missed so much in Europe, but I just didn't remember what I already had.

I think I could do a lot better if I tried a second time, but that's kind of cheating, no?

couldn't get it to take goddamn Bosnia no matter how i spelled it.

That's because Bosnia is actually known as Bosnia and Herzegovina and although it is sometimes called Bosnia, it has been recognised mainly as Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially following the end of Yugoslavia and the attainment of independence from the Soviet Union.

I can understand though, I'm not particularly confident when it comes to unified countries.

I got 176. Only missed out Benelux (which I was kicking myself about) and some Pacific/Caribbean islands + Bahrain. I have taken the quiz before though, Sporcle is a great site.

I'm not even going to attempt this. I would do absolutely horrible, especially since I've never taken a geography class in my life.

I took lots of geography, but so much has changed since then, and I have to admit, I haven't kept up very well.

I'll just correct you on the fact that Yugoslavia was never a part of the Soviet Union (if that's what you meant), in fact it wasn't even a member of the Warsaw pact, actually, it wasn't even completely a member of the eastern bloc, it was a founder of the Non-Aligned Movement, and it didn't have a completely communist economy like the rest of the eastern bloc.

You're right on the Bosnia part, though. :techman: Bosnia and Herzegovina respectively are two geographical regions with not fully defined mutual borders, Herzegovina being the smaller southern part of BaH, and Bosnia the rest, but Bosnia is used as a shorthand for both the geographical region and the state quite often, even by people from the region.

Anyway, I got around 110, mainly because of my difficulty with the English spelling of many countries. This thing should really have a spell-checker.

i should point out i meant i couldn't get the spelling of Herzegovina part right. I knew it was Bosnia and Herzegovina.

pissed me off though that they took 'Macedonia' and 'Vatican' not Vatican City and FYR Macedonia yet wouldn't take 'Bosnia'.

No way?!

Damn, I always assumed that the dissolution of Yugoslavia had something to do with the fall of the Soviet Union and subsequent re-establishment of independent countries in Europe.

Cheers for clearing that up though, you learn something new every day!

Most of the Eastern European countries weren't part of the Soviet Union, either, but dominated by it.

I got 126 on first try but I ran out of time. I also had trouble with some of the English country names, otherwise it would be two more. ;)
