As funny as it might be, I can't help but think that the joke would wear thin over the life of the station. Some of the other possibilities seem more fitting (I'd say Venture, but I'm biased), though it's more than likely that the name Serenity is riding on Firefly fans.
Completely ridiculous - he tried something similar a while back to have a bridge in Europe to be named after him by having his viewers vote online to skew the point of the contest. They rejected that one after he won, and I'm sure NASA will reject this one. Woulda been awesome, though, and I'm sure NASA appreciates the attention from the non-nerd community...
Stephen (the actor, not the character he plays), as a diehard SF fan, loves NASA interaction and has even had a conversation with an astronaut aboard ISS who was wearing one of his "Wriststrong" wristbands. The conversation with Gerstenmeyer didn't reveal much on the Node 3 conversation, I'm afraid, but Colbert had one of his rare character breaks when he was told about the stuffed owl they keep atop the lunch pad to scare away woodpeckers who would otherwise try to peck through the insulation of the main fuel tank.
