An interesting observation from a friend

Last night I have some friends over who had not seen the recent Star Trek movie. They read the comic Countdown before watching it and after viewing the movie we have a conversation over what we liked/disliked. One of my friends made the comment that he didn't think the timeline split off with contact with the Kelvin. He defended his argument by saying during the police chase scene with young Kirk that crime was not supposed to exist on Earth by the 23rd century so why is there a police force? So he believes that an earlier event either caused the timelines to diverge at some point. It was an interesting observation on the movie that I hadn't noticed.

The Kelvin incursion (when baby Jimmy was born) happened before the cop scene. So...that invalidates your friend's argument.

Assuming it was ever established that there was "no crime" in the 23rd C, not even trivial stuff like domestic quarrels.

They've said there's no poverty on earth in the 24th century, and that humans are beyond racism by the 23rd (which wasn't true - watch STVI's anti-Klingon Kirk or the constant anti-Spock jibes in TOS).

I loved that STXI took the cheesy sheen off Star Trek Earth. They made it a believable place, rather than the money-free "we're better humans!" farce of DS9 and Voyager. IMO. YMMV.

Yeah, I kinda agree with Daniel, we Humans are Never gonna be a Near-Perfect Utopian Society, it's really not in our genes...

I just hope that our future generation's decide, "...Not to Kill today..." more often than not.

I agree. I think it made the movie very believable. And definately relates better to people who aren't familiar with Trek.

@ King Daniel- that take on racism in ST 6 was on an opposite ends to the ST est. of non racist attitudes; probably most noted in "Savage Curtain" & "Let this be you last battlefeild" to the exstent Nichell Nicoles flat out refused certain lines in the script.

@ Davey NY- Don't forgret that near perfect Utopian society "farce" as you put it, was started with the next generation. Picard was quite clear about that..or maybe he was just referring to that of the french, y'know the ones that had english accents : )

As far as it's not in our genes...I wonder how many accomplishes and history makers in any frontier would of never been seen if they had said 'well we can never do that' ??

Something to chew on...

I should imagine that crime is rare on Earth due to satelites monitoring everything and a police force that can be beamed to the location of any crime scene. Your friend was probably wondering why there was a motorcycle cop pottering around in the desert just in case somebody went speeding in an antique.

One of the nice things about the novelisation of Star Trek IV was that it gave credit to Uhura for scrambling Starfleet communications long enough to give the others a chance. She also had to beam out of the transporter station seconds before Federation security arrived and leg it (no mean feat at her age and in that skirt) to the Vulcan Embassy to claim asylum. I don't think that Federation policing and security should be anywhere near as shambolic as we see on screen. Even in the bar room brawl, one call from the bar owner could have a security team on site to stun everybody inside of a minute.

Does the bar fight even last a full minute? :)

Also, I do believe you're confusing IV with III. :) That said among the many things I like about the novelization, the explanation of what happened to Uhura is a plus.

Yeah - lol III - time for bed methinks! Also true that a bar fight invloving Kirk lasts less than a minute. However he will need a security team to stitch his shirt back together afterwards.
