An Alien Captain The Next Step?

Maybe this belongs in Future Trek rather than here but I was thinking that all of the series have progressed and shown us a different race, age, and sex commanding officer. I was wondering if another series takes place would they go cast an alien Captain? If so then what species would they pick from to use?

A Vulcan might be too stiff and boring... a Klingon too foreign(unless it was Worf). Perhaps a Betazoid?

Progression? Maybe, but:

TOS - Kirk. The quintessential WASP.

TNG - Picard, an old bald guy. And he's also French, though strangely sounds like an Englishamn.

DS9 - Sisko, a black guy.

Voy - Janeway, a woman.

Ent - Ummm... back to the WASP again. Whups, what happened there...

*chuckles* I believe honestly the most creative suggestion was the Horta.

I personally would love to see this, though it would never happen on screen.

It would be a great approach but for obvious reasons would never fly. :P

Still it was a neat answer.

If i was to stay in the sprit of the OP thread? How about and Andorian woman. having to cope with her race's agressiveness while finding a balance to deal with her crew and the situations they face.

actually, there was a Horta crew member in some novels and comics. he had a UT attachment and in the comics actually had eyes too...

I don't know about you guys but I would love a Vulcan captain. It would have to be something like the Corps Of Engineers books though since they make great problem solvers.

Another one would be a Ferengi. Those guys are damn cool if you ask me. Have Rom be a captain and sometime his greedy Ferengi side comes out and his first officer has to put him in check. LOL!

I recently read the book Web Of Romulans and than was a pretty good book because you got to see Federation ships with vastly different races inhabiting them. All alien crews and such.

I think a Trek show has to have a human captain. A mainstay of Trek is the examination of the human condition in the future, and the captain, as the traditional anchor of the show, is the focus of that theme. However, a different kind of human is a good idea. I like the homosexual idea; we've seen race and gender breaks, so it's one of the last distinct human aspects to play with. Religion is another, but it's been downplayed as a human variable since the beginning.

Totally new alien.

If they'd go the alien route, I'd make the captain a totally new alien, so that he'd be kind of mysterious (to us anyway) and we'd grow to know him. Or her. It?

The aliens are all just metaphorical humans. Even the non-humanoid aliens, like the Horta or the Medusans, often have something recognizably derived from human behavior. The audience wouldn't be able to relate to them otherwise. So there's no problem with an alien captain - it would still examine "the human condition." I demand a Horta captain! :rommie:

A Vulcan would be an interesting choice in my view, but you'd have to have a particularly strong cast for him to play off of.
