An Actual Encyclopedia Update

Cronos6939

Before you get started, no, this isn't the same old thread asking when there will be an update. So keep reading...

A while ago (a pretty good while ago) I decided that the powers that be were probably not going to produce an updated version of the Star Trek Encyclopedia, covering the end of DS9, the last 3 years of Voyager, all of Enterprise, and Nemesis. So (also a pretty good while ago, something like 2005) I started to do so myself. First it was just going to be a supplement to the latest printed version, which meant watching all the episodes that hadn't been covered and cataloging it all.

But then the latest printed version already had a supplement to the version before that...so then I decided to integrate it all. I had to OCR all of the old text and integrate it... and along the way, I found bits and pieces that the Okudas (who wrote those last editions) had missed, so of course those needed to be integrated as well (not to frown on the Okudas--there's just so much information that they were bound to miss a few things). Throw some everyday life, new job, moving to a new state, moving again to a new apartment, moving my fiancee in, & getting all married on top of that... and it's definitely taken awhile.

Memory Alpha and TrekCore have been of enormous assistance; they're great references, so many thanks to them. Images come largely from http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Main_Page, http://trekcore.com/, and scans from my various Trek non-fiction books, but there are other images I had on my computer from somewhere else (wherever that may be...who knows as I've been compiling it all for years). I'll stick some acknowledgements and credits at the end. Once I get there.

Of course, now we're a year or so away from the new movie, so it's not out of date quite yet... but I still have all the source files, so updates should be a little less troublesome from now on.

Anyway.....I've finally started pulling everything together. I'm not anywhere near done yet either. But for the time being, you are welcome to request a copy of "A." Take a look through it and get a glimpse at what's to come.......eventually.

Cronos,it's been years since I've seen my hardcopy version of the encyclopedia. There has always been one entry that bugs the shit out of me.
Battle of Clontarf, referred to in the DS9 episode where O'Brien&Bashir dress as ancient warriors for a holodeck escapade.
The ST E entry asserts that the battle was a disaster for the native Irish forces, when the exact opposite was true.Did Lee win at Gettysburg? NO.
What bugs me is that this battle was REAL,the historical fact WAS check-able.The encyclopedias writers probably fell over themselves to get Trek info right, then fuck up on a "real world" fact.

If this has been rectified on the online version,I apologise,I don't have time today to check.:scream:

I'd sure like to check it out! :D

One thing that always bothered me were the assumptions made. Like it was assumed that the Endeavor was at Wolf 359 just because its captain spoke about how nasty the Borg were.

I've had my own plans to do updates like this, but I kind of gave up when Enterprise went sour for me. I stuck to mostly Enterprise: http://databank.lowerdecks.com/encyclopedia.shtml

If you want, you can use this for reference, but please don't copy it. It'd be pretty easy to do considering it's the exact format of the books.

Doesn't the book also claim the Melbourne was named after a British warship that fought at the battle of Midway, where there were no British ships at all?
