AMT USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B)

Hello there people! I'm new here, figured with all the forum-ing I do I should join a Star Trek one. I've joined one for everything else.

Anyway, I'm only a teenager, and I love all aspects of the show. My dad got me into it way back when, and also into old model kit building. This was the first one I did on my own, (which I also bought myself), and to be actually finished with satisfactory results.

So here's the link.

So what do you people think? I personally was really happy with how it turned out, but the blue edge around the saucer looks terrible. I painted everything with a brush, and that rim is just nasty. Also, if any of you can help, how the heck am I supposed to mask things off on a ship like this? I tried, but the paint just bled through and made things worse. I have a few more models to paint, and I'd really like them looking as best they can. Masking works fine for the TOS enterprise 'cause it's got almost no detail, or for the larger scale ships, but I'm at a complete loss on how to handle these middle-sized ones.

Actually the paintjob looks OK, but your photography could use some work

There is a brush-on masking liquid. I've never used it, but if you let it dry, you shouldn't get any bleed under.

For that saucer rim, you could try a paint marker for a "touch up" of the white, or blue, whichever you can match properly. Just don't let the paint marker get too much paint or it'll run.

Or an extremely stiff flat brush with not too much paint in it.

Thanks for the suggestions! So, this masking liquid's just like paint? You paint it over spots and voila? And how would you get it off?

As for my photography, I can do better, I agree. But I just got a new camera and I'm still working out the bugs. There are a few clearer pics of up-close sections.

It's supposed to just peel off. There's actually some videos on youtube about how to use it.

This one can only be used with oil-based paints, as it's water based itself.

good job Tocher. Is this the new R2 reissue of the Enterprise-B ?
I remember back in the 90s. The E-B was my second kit I ever built. Gee, it was awful. Yours is great compared to mine, trust me on this !

Thanks to others aswell for the comments. And no, this is the original AMT version bought off eBay for $90 before I new the re-issues existed. This is also my second kit, however, my dad was fairly experienced and taught me some stuff. Though he didn't actually help on this one.

"AMT" did reissue some of these kits a few years ago.

You should've been able to get it for less than $90.

I only paid $50 for a sealed original BOP, but that was several years ago.

Is there any way to tell the original fromthe reissue? And no, at the time everything on amazon and ebay was over $100. This was $65 with tax and shipping.

The AMT re-issues used the same molds, I believe, but I never got my hands on any of them.

AMT only made one run of E-B's, the same way they only made one run of Excelsiors before permanently modifying the molds to make the B, which means we won't be seeing a repop of the Excelsior any time soon.

That aside, Round2, who know owns AMT, did modify the B further for the current release - they got rid of the engraved windows on the secondary hull, flattened out the saucer edge to get rid of that stepped effect, re-detailed the upper surface of the secondary hull, made the back of the neck curved instead of the original flat piece AMT made and they tooled up a completely new more accurate saucer bottom. The decals are also more extensive, including names and registries for both the E-B and the Lakota from DS9.

Did they do a new E-E? That's really the one I need as I used my original Sovereign to make a Romulan BOP.

The E-E is a straight repop, no changes. They might have tweaked the decal sheet though. I haven't picked that one up yet.

I'm hoping to pick up the E, another B, a refit 1/1000 A, and all the 1/2500 series. I'm making my dad a wall of gold ships for his birthday like he's always wanted. And since they're all in the same scale...

Also would like a few klingon ships, but I don't have much money at the moment. :P

I remember there was a chrome plated 1/2500 set of the original, A & D. They never did that with the B, C & E set. I might still have the chrome set somewhere.

I'll be doing full ships like on the E. Mostly because it'd make me sad to cut them in half, but also because I don't have the skill required to cut them in half without breaking or mangling them.

How do you mean? Like, have them taken to a gold plating shop or something?

Whatever process they use to "plate" chrome & gold model car rims.

I don't even know how they plate plastic, but if those chrome Enterprises can be done, I imagine an assembled ship could be done.

Depends on the cost and if a given place can do plastic without melting it.

Otherwise, there's probably a good looking gold spray paint that comes close to a plated look.
