The Amiga is probably dead, at least the spirit of the original Commodore Amiga. Fantastic machine, then. Not anymore. I see the Amiga, as people want it to be, more vaporware and wishes than actual solid product. I watched the video and was totally unimpressed, because they didn't show anything to impress me. If this were 1990, yeah, I'd be amazed! But 2011? No. They'll have to do much more than that.

I loved our Amiga 500. Even though we had ours relatively recently, it was still clear that it was a great machine for its time. But I don't think it has much chance of coming back. Too much competition in too many markets right now.

Amiga Inc. (and Hyperion Entertainment) haven't gone away in the past 20 years, they're just a low profile company. They release new operating systems periodically, and you can buy PPC motherboards that work with it. The operating system AmigaOS4 was released in 2004, with AmigaOS4.1 available at present. The OS is quite a bit different to that which came with the original 1980s computers, and I'm not even sure if there is compatibility.

Before Windows and Mac OS we already had a multitasking computer...

I had a 1200 with a hard drive - with the small file sizes back then, it seemed like infinite storage capacity for someone used to floppy discs. I used to mess around with the various music editors, and amassed a huge collection of sound samples on that hard drive.

Do you still have the hard disk ITL? You could copy your files to a DVD. Things from your childhood can be nice to keep and look back on.

Oh, I sold that Amiga many years ago with the drive still in it. And my childhood took place in the pre-Amiga era! Pre C64 era, come to think of it....

I was mulling over whether to post in this thread or in the Predicta thread, but I think this is more appropriate:

Basically, it's a modern PC in various Commodore skins, with Amiga skins coming. Personally, I'm an old Atari 400/800/XL/XE guy - so if they make one of those I'm definitely getting one!

But regardless of the age-old Atari/Commode-door wars it's good to see continued interest in these vintage systems, made back in the day when programming was still fun and new (at least, to me). I'm still in the process of pulling all my old Atari 8-bit stuff on to my Mac's Atari emulator. I'd forgotten how many old disks I had and most of them are still good, surprisingly. The ST stuff will be more of a challenge, though...

I used to have an 800XL way back when - I remember writing a music program in BASIC that used a joystick to change music patterns in real-time. And stuff.

I loved my Amiga 500, and i had every peripheral for it, the cheese wedge shaped 20meg HDD, the Cd-rom, also a nice little third party 14mhz CPU add-on that piggy backed on top of the original CPU inside the Amiga to double its speed...and lets not forget that memory expansion slot that allowed you to go all the way up to that fantastical memory size of 1 meg.

Great days with a great bit of kit.

Well i had a Atari ST520 and Atari STE520, that sort of means i had a Atari 1040ST.

I've owned an Atari 400, 800, 2x800XL's, 520ST and 1040ST.

Still have a functioning 800XL w/ 2 810 disk drives (one with a happy chip - love that thing!) and the 1040ST. I had 3 external floppy drives for the ST's, but they all broke from the same thing - extended formatting, designed to get a few extra sectors out of a standard 720kb floppy. I think the format squeezed more tracks on the media, but as a result, it over-extended the read head mechanism and every time it eventually seized near the drive hub. The 1040ST internal drive is the only one that has survived - probably better built than the older externals.

I've used a few programs to extend 720K floppies but not on the Atari's, I have a few XT's which nicely could convert 720Kb floppies into 830Kb ones, I can't remember the name of the program...

Both my 800XL and 65XE are working fine, they both have floppy drives and of course casette... ah.. those were the days..

To stay a little on topic, I've also got two C-64's one older type and the later version which looks a little like a small Amiga.

^ That later C64 was the best one - the sound chips from some earlier models were a bit strange - certain frequency ranges sounded more muffled and less "zingy". But the later model's sound chip was by far the best sounding.

ITL, are you familiar with SID files and software like SIDPlay2?
