Spoilers American Gods - Season 1

Watching the first four episode I was a bit surprised they didn't give the big reveal of what exactly is going on yet. I'm almost half way through and I don't think we've actually heard the word god spoken, at least to Shadow.

As for Fuller and Green being fired, Fuller seems to be one who has a very clear vision of what he wants, and he probably just won't back down when the production companies or other producers refuse to cooperate.

Purely by a ironically appropriate coincidence I watched Come to Jesus, the season finale, today. My mom and I don't really do holidays, so it didn't even occur to me what day it was until I started it and they started dealing with all of the different Jesuses.
Easter was a really fun character, and another interesting look at how some Old Gods have managed to stay relevant in the modern day.
The backstory stuff with Bilquis was interesting and the reveal of where her loyalties lie was a nice little twist.
The last scene, with the Odin reveal and Easter stealing Spring was awesome.
Laura's conversation with Shadow should be very interesting. I'm curious to find out exactly what Odin/Wednesday's interest in Shadow is.
I'm definitely thinking the book is going to be moving a lot farther up in to read pile now.

I hope the next showrunner is still going to give us things like Media as Bowie and Bilquis in Tehran and such. I read a lot of the twitter stuff while it was airing and there was a lot of consideration given to all the details such as music, costuming, lighting, and so on. It made it really seem that they were trying to do more than just churn out product.

I really enjoyed what they did with Laura and Sweeney, they were my favorite characters and I really enjoyed their interaction. I'm not sure what Fuller's plans would've been but it'd be nice if they are able to bring in Bilquis and Nancy more in the episodes to come. I did buy the book but I haven't read it so I don't know how it plays out and how close the show has been sticking to it though I know they've expanded some roles from what I've heard.

Seems Fuller and Green's departure means Gillian Anderson is leaving the show as well. I was trying to think who might be able to fill in those shoes and if they could get Tilda Swinton that might work. Not sure if she'd do TV and/or if she'd be affordable. Any other casting thoughts?

I just read about this news myself and it's very disappointing. I was hoping the show would be able to move forward without too many problems with the departure of Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, but this is a significant loss, too, as is the possible loss of Kristen Chenoweth.

That being said, I don't remember how much of a role Media had in the book after her first appearance (same for Easter), so it might not be that big of a problem, but Gillian Anderson's performance in season one was sublime and one of the best parts of the show.

Media's nature does allow for her to have an amorphous appearance and we didn't meet Easter until the very end. Not that their departures are trivial but they can be worked with. It might be hard to make it work well but maybe they could have Media always be a different actress (actor?) in each appearance. I do think it will be a real challenge to try to produce a worthy follow up to the first season.

The loss of so many of the people from season one is concerning. My enthusiasm for Season 2 has definitely dropped.

Well, to be clear, only Fuller, Green, and Anderson have actually left. Two showrunners and a supporting actor. Chenoweth's status is unknown and is also only a supporter.

Fuller gets Discovery -- Woohoo! (big Hannibal fan). Fuller leaves Discovery for American Gods (never heard of it) -- Damn. After seeing American Gods -- Worth it.

Start wondering when Season 2 is coming back aaaaaaand... Fuller leaves American Gods... :brickwall:

Even just losing those three is a major blow for me. Fuller and Green were a big part of how the show ended up being so good, and Anderson was awesome as Media.
I'm not going to start screaming and ranting that it's going to suck now, I'm just not as enthusiastic as I was before. It'll probably still be good, I'm just not sure it'll be as good.

Good to hear. Knowing Gaiman will be keeping a close eye on things is a relief.
I wonder if he would have taken on the full showrunner job if he wasn't already busy with Good Omens.

Maybe, but probably not. He's already been burned once in that role (Neverwhere) and the only reason why he chose to take full charge of Good Omens is because of his close relationship with Terry Pratchett and feels like he owes it to Pratchett to see it through. Gaiman wasn't even going to be involved it at all until he got a letter from Pratchett after his death.

Neverwhere was originally a BBC-produced television series that Gaiman created with Lenny Henry. However, during the production of the show, Gaiman became increasingly frustrated with studio meddling and how it warped his vision of the story. Before the show was even done, Gaiman decided he would tell his version properly, separate from the show, hence the novel. After that experience, he swore off television productions (at least in any show running capacity) until the productions of Good Omens (because of the Pratchett letter) and American Gods (because of Bryan Fuller).

Hannibal producer Jesse Alexander will be taking over as showrunner for Season 2.
One interesting tidbit in the article I don't remember hearing before is that Neil Gaiman was upset about how much Fuller and Green were changing things from the book in their version of Season 2.
Hm, that's news to me as well. I wonder where those "reports" are from since CBR doesn't cite the claim and I've never seen Gaiman say that on Facebook or Twitter where I follow him.

Either way, the addition of Alexander sounds promising. Hopefully season two will move forward without too much of a hitch.

Well, our cable company just dropped Starz with no explanation, so - crap. Gotta wait till the second season is on disk before we can see it.

Season 2 has begun filming and set to be out in 2019.

From Gaiman:

I’m still part of the show and enthusiastic about it — I just did a rewrite on the first episode which starts filming this week. Bryan Fuller and Michael Green left, after disagreements over budget issues. (They wanted more than the 9 million an episode they had). Gillian Anderson was only signed up for one season. Kristen [Chenoweth] should be back the next time Easter is in the story.
