AMC's Hell on Wheels, Season 4

My guess is that he was to die for real back in the S2 finale (when the original showrunners were in charge) and they made sure to wrap up all his connections to everyone BUT Bohannon. He really has nothing to do with the rest of them anymore.

I don't really know why, but I think this was my favourite episode of the season, not much happend but it feels like something new is on the horizon...

^Well, it was a good combination of Set Up & Wrap Up. We have wrap-up with Durant & the Governor, Eva & Mickey and set-up with the reporter, Bohannon, Huntington and the Central Pacific.

Agree, that is why I liked it. A wonderful cliffhanger of what is next in this western.

Well said. :)

I get the impression that this is it for Campbell...a pity if so, he'd really grown on me as a worthy antagonist for Bohannon and Durant.

And I hope that somebody shows Eva how to use that gun. Can't recall her ever having so much as held one, and Bohannon had to teach Elam. I know it was a montage bit, but just having her strap one on seemed a little too cutesy.

So...I've been rewatching the series on Netflix in anticipation of the new episodes. Just finished Season 2. For me, this series really grows with each viewing, and Season 2 strikes me as a particularly tightly plotted season...hardly a wasted story beat.

That said, one odd bit of business stands out for me, which I post here for either speculation or enlightenment from somebody who has behind-the-scenes info on the matter. It seems like they went through a lot of trouble to establish Durant's wife as a character only for her to leave him offscreen between seasons. Granted that she certainly served a story purpose in driving Lily to try to bring the Durants down, but one gets the impression that perhaps they were setting Mrs. Durant up to be Lily's replacement as Thomas's female collaborator and potential rival.

Instead, Season 3 introduces a third character to fill that roll, Mrs. Palmer, who remains relatively undeveloped by this show's standards...she maintains a presence and occasionally serves a story purpose, but hasn't really had any kind of arc to speak of. Was there perhaps a change of plans that caused them to abandon Mrs. Durant in favor of introducing Mrs. Palmer?

ETA: BTW, Season 4 just became available on Netflix streaming, if anyone's interested.

I'm just upset that Lily had to die. She was so pretty, and I miss seeing her brighten up an otherwise dreary atmosphere on the show. Sure, there's plenty of other pretty faces around, but man...

If Cullen Bohannon becomes emotionally invested in you, your episodes are numbered.... :p

Another odd bit of business that stuck out at me in Season 2 was Psalms's sickness for a few episodes in the middle of the season. The way they played that, it seemed like something more would come of it, but he just got better.

I just hope that Cullen's wife and baby survive; the death toll on this show is just taking out too many characters.

And, of course, we have to see the Swede (I'm NORWEGIAN!) get his comeuppance. I want an epic showdown, damn it.

I fully suspect we'll see a lot of reckonings this year, being the final season.

Lilly's execution was definitely one of the most harrowing experiences I've seen on TV in a very long while. The way it was filmed (total POV) made you REALLY experience what she was feeling up until the end when they put the bag over her head and you see Bohannon looking up at her, the quick, scared, shallow breaths, the long wait time before they open the floor... I've become totally jaded to TV and movie body counts but that one got to me. And, of course, there was always the hope of a Hollywood last-minute rescue...which never came. Tragic... :(

You mean Ruth; Ruth was hanged, not Lily. Lily was strangled to death by The Swede.

I agree with you about Ruth's execution; that was definitely one of the most heart-breaking, tragic deaths. You were really able to tap into her fear, panic and sorrow in the last few minutes of her life. It was rather unnerving.

^^^ Ruth, yes. My mistake.

I miss both of them, actually. They both added an air of kindness and compassion in an otherwise treacherous world, yet still had a profound inner strength to allow them to seemingly meld into that world with relative ease and help others through it. I think we will not see their like again. :(

I fully expect we'll see set-up for a lot of reckonings this year, as the second half of the final season will air next year.

I recently had a thought regarding where they might go with one thread.

Eva's nursing a grudge against Bohannon over Elam. Eva now carries a gun.
