AMC's Hell on Wheels, Season 4

I think this is good, too. It sounds like there's a proper plan, so we'll get a definite end to the story. I'll miss it but it's far better to end on high note--always leave them wanting more, as they say.

4x11, "Bleeding Kansas" (running commentary post)

Well, that was a surprise...didn't expect to see Rev. Cole again!

And Durant practicing medicine!

Great casting for young Ruth...right down to her mannerisms.

Good lord, you can't say that Sydney isn't suffering for what he did....Between that and Mickey's cousin, the gore in this episode is set on 11.

Correction: You can't say that he didn't suffer....Crap. I think my impression of the shot in that one commercial they've been running today was on the money...Ruth is going to get walked to the gallows...by Bohannon.

Or jail...guess it wasn't going to be done with that quickly.

"Cullen grapples with Ruth’s unexpected decision. Louise jeopardizes her reputation to fight for a story she believes in." It sounds like Ruth's going to go willingly. They indicated in the video extra for the upcoming episodes that characters would be leaving the show as the railroad moves on from Cheyenne. Ruth would have been one of those characters, so it fits the show's M.O. perfectly that she'd be killed off.

They're not even trying to hide it...she pleads guilty and is sentenced to hang.

Wow, they must have borrowed fx guys from Walking Dead for this episode. Other than the gore I actually thought it was a pretty slow episode.

Holy crap! They really upped the gore factor for this one. I really don't want to see Ruth get hanged; maybe the Governor will pardon her?

Doesn't look too good, though.

For me the episode was all about the tension of whether or not they could keep Sydney alive and save Ruth, and it seemed to go very quickly.

In one of the extras on the site, they were discussing how realistic they made the leg--Hope they appreciate that the result of their work had me averting my eyes during those scenes...!

The title for this episode should have been "Men Like Us"...it had to be deliberate that they had Bohannon involved in conversations with three different people about "men like us". Interestingly, the only one in which Bohannon himself made the comparison was with Durant. (They broke the fourth wall a bit there, too, with Durant asserting that he'd be remembered by history and Bohannon wouldn't.)

Good episode! That amputation, that was... something. I'm not sure I like the psycho cousin character, too much of chliche.

IMDB has a brief episode synopsis for the season finale, scheduled to air Nov. 22:

As the railroad prepares to leave Cheyenne behind after Sherman Peak; Cullen returns to Fort Smith to get his family.

Mark, if you're still looking in, IMDB has an actor credited as "Chinese railroad worker" appearing in this episode.

Well, they got the guilty plea out of the way quickly.

I got a good laugh out of Campbell dancing.

Bit of a continuity error--Ezra supposedly telling Ruth that she smelled like shit at a point in the season when Cullen hadn't gone to see Ruth yet. Saying that he didn't want to go to hell after Ruth's comments about Mormons was supposed to be the first thing he'd ever said to her.

Interesting choice to show the hanging from Ruth's POV.

I was very happy to see Cullen show up for the hanging.

I'm wondering where things are going with Mickey & cuz vs. Campbell. Given that he's the historical figure, I have a feeling that it may not end well for them....

Things are not looking good for the Bohannon family in that teaser.

Also, I think it's high time for Durant to do something bastardly again. He's almost becoming warm & fuzzy.

ETA: I didn't say anything about Cullen quitting because at first I dismissed it as a temporary development. But I've been thinking about it, and as it is the last season coming up, and Cullen's supposed to be going to find his family, maybe they do plan to shift some focus to the Central Pacific/Mormon side of the story via Cullen.

HOLY CRAP, THAT WAS SAD!! :wah::wah:

I was kinda hoping Mickey and IrishMerle would start a shoot-out or something. I supposed all that sort of thing is bound to happen later. Does NOT look good for the Mormons at the Fort, that's for sure. I hope nothing bad has happened to Cullen's family--looks like the next/final season will be all about getting them back.

I DO hope that it all leads to a final showdown with The Swede.

It would have been sadder if Cullen hadn't showed until after they put the hood on her...I was afraid they'd do something like that.

ETA: If they are splitting Cullen off from the UP side of things, I can see why they're making Durant more likeable...they need us to be more invested in his part of the show without Cullen there.

ETA: Further speculation about Mickey vs. Campbell....

There's a shot of Bluecoats with their rifles aimed towards the camera, followed by a shot of Campbell looking smug. A couple of episodes ago, Campbell had threatened to call the fort and impose martial law, which was alleviated by Bohannon agreeing to become Chief of Railroad Police. They've said that characters will be leaving the show as the railroad leaves Cheyenne...I'm guessing that this may be the end of the line for Mickey....

So...that was pretty spiteful of Bohannon with his dying mother-in-law.

Mickey's still with us...they just contrived to keep him and Eva moving West where the story is going.

I suspect that Huntington knows more about the fate of Bohannon's family than he's letting on. Was that bit about the tent with the mud floors a slip? How would he know about Bohannon's recent living conditions?

Overall, kind of uneventful for a season finale...lots of set-up, but the only shit flying was during the fight between Durant and Campbell. Still, I look forward to seeing what's in store for 1869.

So, Bohannon has a new quest. Not sure how this is going to play out with his family. I really, REALLY want to see a final showdown with Gunderson, that evil fuck.

Oh, they're definitely setting things up for the Bohannon and Swede trains to collide again, so to speak.

Something that struck me rewatching seasons 3 and 4 is how isolated Christopher Heyerdahl's been from the rest of the main cast, for the most part...a couple of episodes a season with Anson Mount, otherwise he's off doing his own little show.
