Am I The Only One Who Will Be Disappointed If We Don't Get A Full Trailer?

I mean, there's a real chance of fanboise interruptus here, isn't there? All day long people are getting excited about all the things we might see...

...and there's a chance that we're just going to see a couple of characters talking tensely on an underlit set. Or worse, on location!

In order to avoid an avalanche of online teeth-gnashing and tearing of garments, I think we at least need to see:

  • A long shot of the ship;
  • All of the major characters in costume;
  • On the bridge;
  • And the transporter room with transporter effect;
  • Another long shot of the ship, firing phasers;
  • And the Klingons;
  • On the Klingon bridge;
  • And a long shot of the Klingon ship;
  • Firing phasers;
  • Also weird aliens;
  • With a lot of swelling orchestral music;
  • And a narrator repeating that "Space The Final Frontier" jazz;
  • Another long shot of the ship;
  • A cameo by some character from an old Star Trek show;
  • A really, really long shot with the camera flying around the ship;
  • And Gene Roddenberry.
Otherwise, it sucks.

They announced the show in November 2015, I think they owe us a proper trailer at this point.

With a long shot of the ship firing its phasers!!

Not really. Just be happy to know the very basic basics. Plus some cool ships shots.

It's unfortunate that right now, I'm more excited about The Orville.

They have to show us all the props, too.

And enough shots including bridge displays for us to blow up and extract trivial information like the middle names of the characters and where the ship was constructed, etc.

Disappointed? Just a little, but it's better than nothing.

But you're right that if we don't get a full trailer, there will be serious nerd rage.

It's unfortunate that right now, I'm more excited about The Orville.
Yeah, same here. And that's something I never thought i would say about anything produced by Seth McFarlane, especially over Star Trek.

I'm entertained by the prospect of The Orville but I have no investment in it - it just looks like fun for as long as it lasts.

You have investment in Discovery? Careful, we might end up thinking you're actually a fan and care. ;)

Well, why the hell not have a proper trailer? The first one was more of a "teaser" anyway, especially since the design of the ship may have changed. We already have a fairly decent trailer in the can for Orville, which arguably has equal-if-not-better production values than Enterprise did - a decade of separation between technology levels notwithstanding, and both shows being released at roughly the same time. CBS has done a piss-poor job marketing this show so far, especially considering how many fans (such as myself) dislike being forced to buy into yet another goddam video streaming service that is not likely to have as robust an infrastructure as the more established and popular ones (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc.). They really should at least pretend to make an effort to back their new flagship show that's supposed to drive sales for their "All Access" service. Hell, Voyager had more backing from Paramount when they were trying to get their abortive UPN network spooled up to compete with the "Big Four" back in the 90's!

The musical chairs of producers and several push-back release dates don't add to the confidence level, either. Once again, they're assuming / banking on the name of "Star Trek" alone to ensure fan compliance and interest. The fans are stupid - CBS knows it - and they're doing the barest minimum to make it succeed. I really hope this doesn't translate into the level of production quality dedicated to the show in the final episode cuts. There are already people thinking that Orville will be a better Trek show than Discovery will. I hope that isn't a prescient attitude or it's likely to die yet another premature death and we won't see anything more on the small screen for another decade-and-a-half.

And all we'll hear from CBS after that will be complaints on how the fans didn't support the show.

^^^ Normally I would agree with that sentiment, but with the other oddities that have plagued the show and the lack of general marketing, I question whether or not CBS is really dedicated to the project, despite all of Les Moonves' boilerplate platitudes to the contrary.
