That would be better.
Well, I think it works fine with the ending of it sitting in the repair dock, not yet fully healed, when we all know that it's going to get that way. It matches Picard's emotional state and for that matter that of the crew: it's been shattered, and it hasn't yet recovered, but we know it will be in time. It adds more heft to Picard's emoting.I'm glad to see I'm not the only one! For years I've been whining about that damn last shot, and haven't run across anyone else who felt the same way.
The alternate ending with the new XO and the seatbelt would have been much better
No. No it wouldn't have been.
Not at all.
Not in any way "better."

QFT!
I thought the ending as shown in the finished film was fine and one of the better parts of the film's arc. I just chose to believe it wasn't a setup for a resurrection, just a nod to Data's (unneccessary) death.

When will the UFP discover the brilliance of timers? Data's death coud've been avoided if the phaser was on a timer.
Janeway seemed to learn the use of timers too late, as she was able to be set photon torpedoes on timers to damage Borg vessels but was unable to use any on the Caretaker's array.
THROKTAR: Thanks, sweetie. I didn't know we had palace guards. Why did PICARD have to be the one to go over? Doesn't the Enterprise have entire groups of security and trained personell that can go over to do it?
