Am I alone?

I think Sisko meeting Prophets went on and repeated itself too much. Other than that I thought it was fine.

Not with you. Emissary was so good that most of the rest of the season paled by comparison. With hindsight, they aren't as bad as I thought they were then, but still, it was the best episode of season 1.

Well I'd go with Duet and In The Hands of The Prophets before Emissary but it's a quality pilot episode.

Is it just me or does anyone else hate the first episode/pilot of Ds9?

The best things were wolf 359 clips, the Sisko hates Picard and meeting th enew characters but other than that it was just not up to par even for a pilot.

I don't dislike it only because it effectively introduced us to the characters and the premise of the show. As far as the actual plot and story goes I disliked it as well. The second half, especially, just kind of drags.

pilot episodes are rarely the best in a series, because they have to to a ton of legwork to get you the viewer up to speed on all the characters, and setting etc

Not true for Voyager! :guffaw:

I do think they overdid the Kira thing tho...

they practically screamed it at us "SHES VERY ANGRY!!!!!!!!!! DO YOU GET IT !!!!!!!!!!!!! SHES REALLY ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

I agree with you on this bit.

Because of this, I didn't like Kira very much at all, at first. I love her now. In fact, after Sisko she is my second favorite DS9 character.

But back then I really thought she was way too hostile.

On the plus side, while Kira's character was a little cliched in the pilot, it was nice to have an outsider's perspective on the Federation - someone who wasn't so eager to just accept them as the good guys.
Exactly... Kira had put her life on the line time and again for a free bajor... and now these idiots called the "provisional government" were inviting the federation in. I would be very angry too... to have seen my comrades die for a free bajor, just to have it thrown away

Plus, I think it added to the character later on

My opinion has since changed and I really enjoy Emissary now and rate it as my favourite pilot. I really enjoy the fact that they had Sisko break down in tears and admit he was trapped by the memory of his wife's death...very powerful scene.

This is what impressed me about this episode and Brooks as an actor. They had two hours and I actually was moved by his portrayal. Easily the strongest Trek pilot.

I think "Emissary" was possibly the best Trek pilot. It made me curious to find out how this show was going to work with the non-starfleet characters playing prominent roles in the series. Also, I immediately sympathized with Sisko because of his ordeal losing his wife, and I understood the animosity towards Picard because as TNG fans, we found it very easy to just brush off the deaths that must have taken place because of Locutus. Picard wasn't in control, and that made it okay from the audience perspective, but what about characters who were personally affected by those turn of events. Do they have some right to despise Picard for what happened? Perhaps not so from the audience perspective, since we are conditioned to sympathize with Picard, but how would we feel if it was one of our own loved ones lost in such a way?

It also followed up on what's going on with Bajor, and introdruced the concept of religion in the trek universe without making it partronizing or holding it up as something that needed to be debunked. Plus, the whole premise that the station would become some sort of crossroads with the discovery of the wormhole made it seem like it was going to be an exciting show.

The plot of the episode itself was slow paced at times, but for the most part I was drawn in. The only things that made me wary was that I wasn't sure I liked seeing a Ferengi as a main cast member and I didn't quite like Dr. Bashir. It took a few episodes for me to like Quark. The Quark-Odo interactions were the best part of the deal.

As for Dr. Bashir, I actually don't think I liked him much until the friendship with O'Brien blossomed. He was just too smug and too green for me to like him as a character. The whole Garak relationship disappeared in the 1st season, so there wasn't much of that to look forward to early on. By the 2nd season, I started to like Dr. Bashir. I think "The Wire" went a long way for many fans in solidifying the fact that his character belonged there. As the show went on, I really, enjoyed and looked forward to shows where Bashir had the A-story.

Comparing "Emissary" to "The Man Trap" (1st episode of TOS to air) and "Encounter at Farpoint,""Emissary" does the best job of introducing the key characters and establishing the tone for the rest of the series. "The Man Trap" was a Dr. McCoy episode which was a great stand alone episode, but certainly not the best episode to have as a pilot of a new show before anyone heard of Star Trek. EaF was okay, but a little too drawn out, and not that much of a payoff at the end with the station being a lifeform and Counselor Troi all in tears at the end. The whole purpose of that episode was for Picard to prove that human beings were not savages by not firing at the lifeform and uncovering the truth.

"Emissary" had the best mix of high concept elements, action, and drama. It wasn't perfect, but I think it got the job done.

It was far better than TNG's bozo Pilot. After FARPOINT I almost cried; IT WAS THAT BAD!

I thought it was awesome.
I could get past the Prophets scenes that I first thought were boring (but after several viewings turned out the best part and very cleverly done).

I liked that it was rather slow, taking time to introduce the characters, but still had a cool confrontation with the Cardies towards the end
ALso, one awesome FX shot after another (and quite some that DIDNT get reused 1000 times afterwards :)).

All in all I say it's a great product, with little real "filler", if you like the Prophets scenes, alot going on and alot of atmosphere (music was good too).

I often get out my DVD boxes and end up watching Emissary.

I didn't hate it but didn't really like it either. I thought the scenes where Sisko is talking with the Wormhole aliens to be painful to watch. The Borg scenes were cool. Kira's acting was aweful.

I'm a Niner, but the first seaon has a lot of bad episodes. The pilot of Average at best. Fortunately, the first season also had "Duet", which is still among by top three eipsodes of the series.

If it's the only episode ever you watch of Ds9, then yeah, haha it would be pretty bad. But when you've watched the entire series, then REwatch the pilot episode, then it's one of the best episodes because you see how all of the characters have evolved.

I saw it when I was eight and remember being blown away by the Borg battle, but being too stupid to understand why the angry loud man was talking shit to Picard.

Watching it now, every time I see Sisko look Picard in the eye and say "In the MEANTIME . . ." I get a silly grin on my face. By the first episode, they had already proved that Sisko had a real pair on him.

It also brought over O'Brien, who was, sadly, probably the second best actor and character on TNG but never had anything to do other than stand around in the transporter room and listen to everybody else talk about their feelings.

Some of the wormhole stuff was a little tedious at times but compared to the moronic pilots of VOY, ENT and TNG, it's easily the best by far.

The battles were about as good as they could have done with the budget and the fact that they were constricted by having to use models instead of CGI.

That said, if they remaster DS9 at some point, some more of Wolf 359 wouldn't exactly be blasphemy . . .

I think it's the best Pilot out of TNG, VOY, ENT, DS9, with maybe some compitition from Caretaker.
As for TOS well thats in a league of it's own with the Cage.

That is funny.

I started playing all of the pilots in my mind. I think DS9 is far better than TOS but The Cage is the only pilot that might be better than The Emissary.
