Alternatives to rocket engines

Meredith, what about nitrogen-hydrogen compounds? eg, ammonia (NH3), hydrazine (N2H4) or N6H6 (aromatic ring like benzene) Does it release much energy upon oxidation into N2 and H2O? I'd expect it to have a lower calorific value than hydrogen, but I think this N6H6 stuff is liquid at stp, which is naturally cheaper than handling compressed gasses in cylinders.
