Alternate VOY?

OK, I've started similar threads in the TNG and DSN forums, so I figured I'd take a crack at posting some alternate quantum reality versions of VOY. Here's my first attempt.

In this quantum reality, the Starfleet and Maquis members are almost totally flipped: for example, Chakotay and B’Elanna are Starfleet, while Janeway and Kim are Maquis.

Captain Chakotay, Commanding Officer. Just promoted to captain, this is Chakotay’s second command. Chakotay and other family members were able to convince his father and most members of their tribe to relocate to another colony far from the Demilitarized Zone between Federation and Cardassian space. As a result, his father Kopak wasn’t killed by Cardassians, the event that caused Chakotay to join the Maquis, so he remains a dedicated Starfleet officer, although he has some sympathies with the Maquis’ objectives. Ordered to pursue the Maquis ship Val Jean, they wind up in the Delta Quadrant because of the myterious Caretaker. Just as in the other reality, he decides to destroy the array, stranding the ship in that far-flung part of the galaxy.

Commander Janeway, First Officer. Janeway’s fiancé, Mark, was killed by Cardassians, ironically because he was living temporarily on Chakotay’s ancestral colony. This caused Janeway to question her choice of career in Starfleet and join the Maquis. After being stranded in the Delta Quadrant, she agrees to serve as Chakotay’s first officer, who grants her the provisional rank of full commander.

Lt. Cmdr. B’Elanna Torres, Operations Officer and Second Officer. Long-time colleague of Chakotay and a student of his in his tactical class at Starfleet Academy. She’s not as undisciplined and prone to anger as the B’Elanna we know as she’s taken to heart Chakotay’s meditation techniques.

Dr. Neelix, Chief Medical Officer. In this reality, the EMH is activated only briefly, although he serves as Dr. Neelix’s assistant on difficult cases. Neelix studied medicine with the Vidiians, but left them when he realized how they were misusing their medical knowledge to cure themselves of the phage. Stealing a scout craft, he used his medical knowledge as a kind of one-man interstellar doctor without a border. Upon coming across Voyager, he realizes he can integrate his knowledge with their sophisticated technology and work even more marvels. He trades his knowledge in return for Captain Chakotay making him chief medical officer.

Kes. Kes is married to Dr. Neelix and his trusted top nurse and medical assistant. Her personality and character are similar, only she knows more about medical care than her counterpart. She is also a much better chef than Neelix and takes on that duty as well.

Lt. Tom Paris, Chief Security Officer. As security chief, he is the Starfleet spy who infiltrates Janeway’s crew on the Val Jean. His happy-go-lucky exterior belies how seriously he takes his duty as chief security officer. Paris long ago noticed that adopting a breezy exterior caused his adversaries to underestimate him, or not understand that beneath his bravado lies a razor-keen mind, able to spot trouble a mile away. Tom wears a circle beard. He and Chakotay have a somewhat strained relationship, but they respect each other as colleagues.

Lt. Tuvok, Chief Engineer. As in the reality we know, Tuvok served briefly in Starfleet, then left to begin a civilian life. He becomes interested in starship design and eventually becomes one of the Federation’s foremost civilian engineers. Tuvok rejoins Starfleet, where he works on the design team that eventually develops the neural gel packs used on Voyager. He survives when the ship is transported by the Caretaker to the Delta Quadrant, unlike the chief engineer in the reality we're familiar with.

Ens. Harry Kim, Helm Officer. Disgruntled Starfleet Academy dropout, the bitter Kim joins up with Janeway’s band of Maquis. He has a big chip on his shoulder, and is among the most difficult to integrate in Voyager’s crew. He carries a scar on his right cheek that he refuses to have removed, as it reminds him of his fight with the Cardassians. Although at odds with the senior staff, he develops a wary friendship with Tom.

OK, I almost forgot about this thread, so I'm going to try to revive it. I see no one really bit into this one, so let's see what happens now with my latest alternate version of VOY, and this one is kind of a 'shipper's dream (lots of hookups):

Captain Tuvok. In this reality, rejoins Starfleet two decades earlier. Is encouraged by then-Captain Owen Paris to transfer to the command division. Voyager is his second deep-space command. Is renowned as a brilliant Starfleet captain, and has learned a great deal about human relationships from his command experience.

Lt. Cmdr. B’Elanna Torres, First Officer. Joins the Maquis earlier and eventually gets command of her own resistance cell, operating aboard the Maquis vessel Val Jean. Is offered the post of Voyager first officer when the crew is stranded in the Delta Quadrant. At first amused by young Harry Kim’s affections, she grows to admire his single-mindedness as well as his brilliance as a doctor.

Lt. Kathryn Janeway, Chief Security Officer. Spied on the Maquis on the orders of Starfleet Intelligence, reporting to her old mentor, Captain Tuvok. Has a torrid affair with young Tom Paris, who she tries to settle down.

Lt. Chakotay, Helm Officer. Joined Starfleet after a career as a civilian pilot. An up-and-coming officer, he is Tuvok’s other protégé. He vies for the affection of Kes, who slowly returns his advances.

Lt. Tom Paris, Chief Engineer. Never joined Starfleet, causing a rift with his father. He became a civilian engineer instead who meets B’Elanna through his father. She recruits him to join the Maquis. Hot-tempered, he bristles under the command of the unflappable, logical Vulcan captain. Janeway, his lover and closest friend, is one of the few people he’ll listen to. Also is good friends with the easy going Dr. Kim.

Dr. Harry Kim (Lt., j.g.,) Chief Medical Officer. A recent graduate of Starfleet Medical, he’s originally one of the young medical officers on staff. He must take over command of sickbay when the chief medical officer and others are killed. As a result, the EMH isn’t activated nearly as often, just when Kim needs another set of hands. Is enamored of the fiery first officer, B’Elanna Torres, and since they’re not in the direct line of command, she eventually returns young Harry’s affections. He is also good friends with the volatile Tom Paris, and often counsels him against being rash.

Ensign Neelix, Operations Officer. An expert in starship operations, Neelix offers his services, gleaned from years serving on Talaxian ships in similar capacities. A computer science expert, his skills serve him well as the replacement for Voyager’s deceased chief operations officer. Wins the post by using the smaller computer on his scout ship to lower Voyager’s shields so he can beam aboard to trade technology. Tuvok offers him a position on the ship instead. Given a provisional rank like the Maquis.

Kes, Morale Officer and Head Chef. She serves in much the same capacity as the Neelix we’re familiar with. She is his good friend and was first mate on his small merchant trading vessel. Is slowly becoming enamored with Chakotay, the tattooed and dashing helm officer.

Ensign Seven of Nine, Science Officer. Captain Tuvok decides Seven must become a full-fledged member of the ship in order to make her transition from Borg to human smoother. He makes her an officer, with the provisional rank of ensign, and she is science officer, often taking over for Neelix’s operations post when he’s off duty.

Interesting concept. I really would love to see Dr.Neelix and his dealings with the patients. :)

Why not make an alternate series where Voyager was destroyed in "Caretaker" and the Starfleet crew had to join the Maquis ship? ;)

Chakotay - Captain

Kathryn Janeway - First officer

B'Elanna Torres - Chief engineer and second officer

Tuvok - Security officer serving under Ayala, later on tactical officer (after Ayala is killed in action and Tuvok had regained Chakotay's trust)

Harry Kim - Science officer

Tom Paris - Medical officer

Neelix - Chef and self-proclaimed morale officer

Kes - Chef's assistant and later on head nurse

Ah, the big question. Even Chakotay wanted know if Janeway would "serve under" him - no double entendre implied of course! ;)

Plenty of fanfic out there dealing with this. :D

If Janeway and Chakotay were reversed back to their original positions, I think I might actually prefer the other character versions to their 'real' versions, particularly Dr. Neelix. (I've also always thought Tuvok would be a good Chief Engineer.) Very well done!

I shall endeavor to come up with some of my own.

Voyager was the first Star Trek series to feature a woman as the regular Captain. That was an important milestone that I think shouldn't be compromised. But if that milestone had already been achieved in another series, I'd say that it would have worked well to reverse Chakotay and Janeway's positions.

The Maquis ship was much smaller than Voyager and less capable, so I think Voyager would still have to be the surviving ship.

Dr. Neelix is interesting... kind of reminds me of the Flox character in some ways. ;)

Red Ranger, how wold you reimagine Seven of Nine?

In a leopard-print bikini, preferably!

Seriously, I haven't given it much thought, other than perhaps one of the regulars dies, like B'Elanna, and Seven becomes the new chief engineer, or Kim dies and she takes over operations. Or perhaps the Doctor trains her as his replacement before his program is destroyed. If you thought he had a bad bedside manner, think of Seven's!

Are we ever going to get a Alternate TOS thread?

I really have to think of that one. In some ways, the other shows lend themselves more to this concept than TOS. When I first thought of this concept, I imagined just different captains for TOS, like universe where Spock was captain or McCoy was captain. But I'll give it some thought. I'm also not interested in an alternate ENT thread, only because I'm not crazy about ENT. -- RR

Nice concepts there! I was wondering, since Voyager didn't have a Mirror Universe episode, how would the main crew be like in the MU scenario?

I actually might make a alternate ENT thread in the Enterprise boards, once I finish watching Enterprise...

[My latest mash-up involves an all-Maquis crew aboard Voyager, kind of.
They’re all Maquis that hijack Voyager, with the help of Janeway and certain members of the crew, who are Maquis sympathizers. Janeway manages to trick most of the regular, non-Maquis crew into abandoning the ship before launch with a false alarm, and take the ship to rendezvous with the Maquis. Unfortunately, before they can return to the demilitarized zone with their new starship, they’re transported to the Delta Quadrant. When they try to use the array to get home, they inadvertently destroy it, so it’s not a selfless reason why they’re trapped in the Delta Quadrant.

They attempt to get home as quickly as possible, don’t spend nearly as much time studying anomalies and the like, and don’t follow the prime directive. They even trade technology with some races, even the Kazon in the beginning, to gain safe passage, but will sometimes intervene using many of the same standards they use to justify fighting the Cardassians, becoming kind of intergalactic vigilantes. No EMH – instead, he’s the EEH, Emergency Engineering Hologram, and becomes permanent chief engineer, or simply, The Engineer. Also, they never come across Neelix and Kes, as they took a different route and didn’t run afoul of the Kazon initially. Instead, Chakotay does double duty as the ship’s gourmet chef.]

Captain Kathryn Janeway, Commanding Officer. Janeway is also secretly a Maquis cell leader. She works closely and covertly with Tuvok, who is in charge of a Maquis cell. She plans to rendezvous with the other members of her cell in the Badlands, where Starfleet has assigned her to search for Maquis. Right after they rendezvous with the Val Jean and its crew transports aboard, they’re immediately whisked away to the Delta Quadrant.

Commander Tuvok, First Officer. Here, he is Maquis and leader of a subordinate cell to Janeway’s. Tuvok found it illogical to support what he considers a flawed treaty with the Cardassians, so he resigned two years ago from Starfleet and has been fighting in the demilitarized zone. He and Janeway hatched a plan to hijack several advanced starships to aid their cause.

Dr. Chakotay, (Lt. Cmdr.), Chief Medical Officer. Maquis. In this reality, Chakotay became interested in medicine at an early age. He also never joined Starfleet, so his rank is provisional, granted by Janeway. As CMO, he’s freer to pursue Janeway, who is also less inhibited by his position, as he’s not in the chain of command.

Lt. (j.g.) Tom Paris, Operations Officer. Maquis. In this reality, Tom was never caught by Starfleet, and continued to evade capture. Ihstead of a hotshot pilot, he's a whiz with starship operations and quantum mechanics.

Ensign B’Elanna Torres, Helm Officer. Like Janeway, a sympathizer and secret Maquis member. She is something of a protégé of Janeway’s, who helped her stay in Starfleet.

Lt. (j.g.) Harry Kim, Chief Security Officer. Kim is also a sympathizer and secret Maquis member. After being stranded in the Delta Quadrant, he’s promoted to lt., j.g., and replaces the security chief who dies en route.

The EEH, a.k.a The Engineer. Activated when Chief Engineer Lieutenant Carey, sympathizer and secret Maquis member, dies en route to the Delta Quadrant. In this reality, Lewis Zimmerman also created the emergency engineering hologram program and still based its physical parameters on him. Just as acerbic as his medical counterpart, he just calls himself the Engineer and has trouble coming up with a name.

Ensign Seven of Nine, Science Officer. Captain Janeway decides Seven must become a full-fledged member of the ship in order to make her transition from Borg to human smoother. She makes her an officer, with the provisional rank of ensign, and she is science officer, often taking over Tom's operations post when he’s off duty.
