Alternate versions of characters you prefer to the "real" one

The problem though is even though you could restore the original people you have to destroy the new life that was created out of their DNA. It's a unique situation were you can't really win no matter what choice you make because someone has to die no matter what. It's a Koboyashi Maru of transporter accidents. The reason why I would side with Tuvik is he exist and that is a fact. Tuvok and Neelix being brought back to life is only a theory and you don't even know it will work. The other thing is with Tuvik alive that gives you time to maybe find another option such as downloading Tuvik into a android body or a hologram like the Phage woman the doctor fell in love with. I even wonder if Tuvik would have a Katra like Tuvok I assume does since he is Vulcan and then you mind meld his consciousness into a cloned body.

Jason

You're definitely onto something there.

Thing is Tuvok is a father and a husband. We know how important the former is because of his conversation with Nelix in Elogium and the latter in seeing his greatest desire in Bliss. Being Vulcan, barring some accident, he will live to return to the Alpha Quadrant. By keeping Tuvix you make his children fatherless and his wife a widow. That's a lot of collateral damage over a transporter malfunction.

Yes but if you wait you could still maybe find away to save all people involved. It's not like Tuvok can even really see or talk to his family anyways since they are stuck in the DQ. Also it reminds of something he said about how even though he wasn't back home with his familiy he felt confidence in them being able ot live quality lives because of the ethics he taught them.

Jason 1- I agree that I wish an alternative had been found because I liked Tuvix but if one could not be found what would you do?

I would allow Tuvik to live. A existing life IMO outweights the option of MAYBE bringing someone back. One thing i'm not sure though is when is the right time to give up on finding a third option. In trek you can literally cryo -freeze people for years in hopes of finding a cure or answer. That was what Bashir wanted to do with Bareil. Another issue is that this IMO under normal conditions you think you would contact Starfleet and bring this issue to the federation version of the Supreme Court. Also who even knows what Talaxian laws would be on this issue which would be important since Neelix isn't even a Federation citizen. Neelix was realigious up until "Mortal Coil" so for all we know he might be against Janeway bringing him back because to him his soul would be with his sister living by the big tree, forrest heaven place we got to see.

Chakotay, when he handled insubordination the "Maquis way."

I wish he would've done that more, and randomly, like you never knew when Chakotay would just pop someone in the face for mouthing off.

There was another moment I like, when Chakotay and Paris are on the Year of Hell ship, and Paris says something about "Look around, Chakotay. You can't give me orders." and Chakotay says "We either stick to the chain of command, or we settle our differences the old fashion way."
Paris shut up.

Chakotay's a lover and a fighter.

My choice is going to echo this and add Kes in Warlord.

Jayson 1- I don't think I could do that. I would feel compelled to consider the ramifications to Tuvok's family. They are a long lived species. Not sure I could dismiss that. That's just me though. I wonder if I would feel differently if I was not a parent myself.

The problem though is if we always looked at people as just parents or siblings it means society couldn't function because everyone just about has family. We could look at this as robing Tuvix from a chance to someday find love and have a family as well. I wonder if Tuvix would have inherited the Vulcan's long lifespans. I just thought of another option. Sometimes time travel in Trek works were as you can change the past but people from the previous timeline still exist. I wonder if you could go back in time and prevent the transporter accident. Tuvok and Neelix would never merge but Tuvik would continue on in this new timeline. Also travel back in time and ask Quinn the Q for a favor before he kills himself or even the DeLancie Q in season 7 when he wants Janeway to look over his son. They could bring Tuvix back to life and allow Neelix and Tuvok to live. Of course you then bring up the issue as to why not ask them to bring all dead crewmen back to life.

The Harry Kim from the Vortex that was a hypochondriac... well, not really... Poor Kim, even his alternate versions are boring!

Although I don't typically mind derails there are several tuvix threads to choose from

Yup. Afterthought Kim.

How would Tuvok put it?

"The needs of existing life outweigh the needs of potential life."

I'm sorry. I'll be more careful in the future.
No one is careful here. You're among friends. I'm just stating an, albeit passive aggressive, preference to the endless Tuvix debate.

Picardo plays AU very well. He is great at playing really creepy personalities and yet is so fancy free in other times. Do any of you like 'dark'- EMH?

Thanks so much. I rarely, if ever, join forums but I've been so impressed with the respect you all show for each other, particularly when you have differing opinions, I decided to throw caution to the wind and join. Being new I would hate to break the rules, formal or informal.

I can be the same way. I've relaxed a little when I see certain people but the general undertone is one of respect even if they're pushing the envelope. You always get a warning privately if it's a big deal. I'm sure you'll fit in just fine. Enjoy! And welcome to our group.
