Just one of the parallel universes in Trek.... But not the Kelvin universe, or the mirror universe. One that is very different from the universe we know....
The point of divergence is an event that happened 65 million years ago. Or, should have happened. In this universe the asteroide that drove the dinosaurs into extinction somehow missed earth. Not by far, but still missed. And this way, completely changes history. Eventually a cosmic event has influence on the cosmos itself.
Dinosaurs never went extinct, and kept on evolving. New species emerged, and others vanished. Still, other lifeforms kept evolving as well, as a result a lot of plants, birds, reptiles and fish would look familiar to us, allthough there are a lot of species we wouldn't recognise.
In this radical different fauna, intelligent species emerged as well. Just as the hominids in our universe, several intelligent species co-exist together. But, on this earth, more than one species survives. After a long period of evolution and hybridisation, 4 humanoid species inhabit the earth. One is an descendant of the Troodon, and looks a bit lizard like, has three fingers and two toes. It's skin is green and smooth, with barely any sign of scales. It has cat-like yellow eyes, and gives birth to live offspring. The second species has the same build, but is covered in feathers, with a huge variety in colour. It's face looks a bit like that of a human. The other 2 species look alike. They have a close resemblence to humans, but have a long lizard like tail. One has batlike wings on it's back, the other doesn't have these. They will be known as Saurians.
Despite the differences, the 4 species eventually form a civilisation. This happens after the appearance of a messianic figure thousands of years before our history would have started. Their civilisation matures a lot earlier than ours, and goes back at least 10.000 years. Their language consists mostly out of whistles and clicking sounds, and their writing consists out of symbols instead of characters or letters. For us, it would be hard to make anything out of it. The planet looks quite different from ours. It is warmer, and most habitation is concentrated around the Mediterranian, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia plus Oceania. The lands more up north are considered to cold, and are scarcely inhabited, by saurians in domed cities. Instead of Earth, the translation of the planet's name comes closest to Terra. Their political structure also is nothing like ours. Democracy, dictatorship, communism, socialism, none of these systems apply. Their civilisation and system are humanoid but completely non-human in nature. It is best described as a theological system. Life is revered, and every person is born is this system. They are raised in it, and view the world through this system. There are soldiers, scientists and everything, but the basis is their revering of life. However, they feed on meat, eggs, larvae, locusts, worms etc. Like Klingons, they like raw and living food. Although vegetables are also an important part of their diet. This preferance is the main reason that replicators will never be widely accepted, only when they are more practical in certain situations ( like long journeys in runabouts).
Thousands of years ahead of us, they venture into space at the same time our ancestors are still building the piramids. They colonise Mars and Venus and terraform them completely, which is known as the 3 world system for a while. Still, it takes them millennia before they develop the warp drive ( still hundreds of years before Zefram Cochfane does). When they do, it is stuck to warp 2 for a while, but it is sufficient to reach Alpha centauri, Tau Ceti, Vega, and Epsilon Eridani. These systems also are terraformed and colonised. The Saurians become masters at terraforming in this process, and use genetic engineering to create new dinosaur species to roam the colonised planets. During their exploration of the star systems around them, they come into contact with the Vulcans, who just discovered warp drive. Diplomatic relations and trade between the 2 races commences, which lasts into an almost unbreakable bond. The Saurians develop warp 5 ships soon after this and start exploring at a much larger scale. New races like the Tellarites, Denobulans, Orions, Rigellians, Betazoids, and Gorn are discovered. They are colonised by the Saurians, who give them all kinds of technology. In return, they become subjects to the Saurians. They are not treated like second class citizens however, or fall prey to brutal oppression. A lot of them manage to get high positions into the society of the developing Saurian Empire. Although they keep several unique features of their own culture, they slowly get 'Saurianised', adopting the Saurian system on their planet. Because they never developed warp drive on their own, they build ships according to Saurian design, meant for trade, travel, exploration etc. But most definitely they are never allowed to possess their own warships, and the Saurians take care of their defense, might it ever be necessary. The Saurian religion also deepens, and Terra is more and more regarded as the 'holy world' and the birth place of Galactic Civilisation. Although the Saurian religion is not institutionalised, the highest clerics are usually regarded as the leaders of the Empire, which they keep doing from Terra. Members of other races are not allowed to set foot on Terra, therefore Mars becomes the hub for all other imperial affairs, including the headquarters of the Saurian defences.
At a certain moment, the Vulcans get into conflict with another race, known as the Andorians. A dispute about a planetoid known as Weythan escalates into a conflict. Neither party manages to get the upper hand, and discouraged by the bloodshed, the Vulcans turn to the Saurian Empire. The Saurians come to the Vulcans aid, and chase the Andorians from Weythan, and push them out of the system. In return, the Saurians take claim of the planetoid, which is acknowledged by the Vulcans.
As a result of the Saurian intervention, the Andorians become a rival, and several skirmishes happen over time at the border between the 2 powers, without it ever turning into a real war.
Little did the Saurians know they would really be tested shortly after.... Several bases and outpost are victim to attack, from an unknown race. While their losses are mounting, the Saurians have a hard time putting up a defense. Several months into the war, they manage to ambush one of the ships that are attacking them, and reveal the identity of the attackers. Only dead bodies are found, but the similarity with the Vulcans is shocking. The attackers call themselves 'Rihannsu' but are known to the Vulcans as their distant relatives, the Romulans. With the intelligence gathered on this ship, the Saurians are able to put up an effective defense, and eventually turn this bloody war into their favor. The enemies forces seem to collapse after the battle of Cheron, and the Romulans try to negotiate a cease fire through subspace communication. The Saurians ignore this however and invade Romulan space. After catastrophic losses, the Romulans see no other alternative and surrender. In the aftermath of the war, their entire territory get's annexed by the Saurian Empire, with the exception of Romulus. After the surrender, civil unrest breaks out on Romulus. In this power vacuum, the Remans rebel against Romulan occupation, push them of their world, and invade and conquer Romulus in the aftermath. As a result, Romulus is degraded to a sort of 'third world-planet', from which it will never recover.
The Saurian Empire keeps on developing new ships, and keeps on exploring, terraforming life-less planets and adding newly discovered species to their growing empire. Contact with the Klingons is inevitable. The Klingons have no interest in contact with the Saurians, and keep firing on the Saurian ships, every time they bump into eachother. In response the Saurians fortify the border, and distrust between the two powers lasts almost a century. After this period a detente occurs, and both species start admiring each others cultures.
This peace doesn't last long. In a system not far from the Saurian border, an previously undiscovered wormhole opens and several ships from the Gamma quadrant pass through. These are Jem'Hadar warships, who have discovered the wormhole, and start exploring what is on the other side. They quickly discover Bajor, and when they send reports through to the changelings who founded the Dominion which the Jem'Hadar are part of, a huge fleet arrives in the system. Bajor is quickly conquered, and enters a nightmare that will last for fifty years, costs the lives of dozens of millions of Bajorans and destroys their entire culture as they know it. Now that the Dominion have a bridgehead, they launch an attack into the territory of the neighbouring Cardassian Union. Within 3 weeks the Cardassian Union is occupied and consolidated into the Domnion. The Dominion grant the Cardassians a level of self control, including maintaining their own military fleet, dedicated to defend Dominion interests. The Dominion start to colonise several planets near the Cardassian border, and quickly have a population of hundreds of millions of Vorta, the most loyal servants to the Dominion. In the meantime, the Jem'Hadar stumble over the Breen, and after a short war, they are also subdued, under the same terms as the Cardassians. Leaning on the Cardassian and Breen military, the Dominion have no need to station large fleets of Jem'Hadar warships in the quadrant. They order the Cardssians to construct a station near the wormhole entrance, which they will be running for their Dominion masters. After the station enters service, it's christened 'Terok Nor'.
When the Dominion start to expand into the other direction, they soon find themselves into conflict with the Saurians. Fleets of Jem'Hadar warships enter the quadrant, but are pushed back by combined Saurian and Klingon forces. A truce is signed, but constantly violated by Jem'Hadar incursions. There is a constant series of short borderwars, and real warfare breaks out on several occassions, but it never lasts long. It mostly results in raids on both sides of the border, civillian casualties on the attacked planets and re-instating the border. This situation lasts for decades, until the Dominion start a massive military build up. The alerted Saurians respond by attacking the vessels coming out of the wormhole, and war breaks out once more. Planets near the border suffer greatly, and casualties are in the millions. The Saurians manage to push the Dominion out of the Bajoran system, thus ending the occupation and take Terok Nor. The attempts by the Dominion to retake the station all fail, and they see no other alternative than to agree to a cease fire. The Saurians agree to allow Dominion ships to pass through the wormhole, thus creating a dependancy on Saurian goodwill that will eventually become unbearable for the Dominion. Both sides are commencing into a huge military build-up, since they both realise this situation will not last long and a new war will break out. The Bajorans ally themselves with the Saurians, who in return start giving aid to the rebuilding of Bajor, since they are completely drained of resources. Bajor and the Saurian Empire reach an agreement in which they operate Terok Nor together, with the Saurians assuring the safety of Bajor from the Dominion.
On a regular base Jem'Hadar fleets start to pass through the wormhole and head for Cardassia prime. This goes on for months, after which the Saurians realise they have to do something, before they are faced with superior numbers. In response they seal off the wormhole with a minefield. This infuriates the Dominion, who invade the Bajoran system and attack the station. They are pushed back by Saurian and Klingon forces, and the fighting cools down again. This meant that de facto war had broken out again, although it remained quiet at the border for a while. This changes when a huge Dominion offensive suddenly swipes through Saurian space, and occupies several major planets, until they come very close to the core of the Empire. Here they are halted, but Saurian counterattacks are unsuccesfull. The Dominion retry to take the Bajoran system, but this fails again, and leads to a heavy fortification of the system. For months Saurian forces try to retake their systems, but all attempts fail. In return Dominion forces are constantly raiding into Saurian space, and destroy or damage Saurian ships and bases. A Breen taskforce even boldy ventures into our solar system and attacks Terra. This raid results into millions of casualties, although all Breen ships are being destroyed. This event marked the turning of the tide, allthough it would not seem that way immediately.
Saurian forces consist of highly modern ships. In contrary to their Federation counterparts, they have less ship types, but more ships equipped for warfare. The bulk of the fleets constists out of Defiant class warships, equipped with cloaking devices, Galaxy class starships, Nebula class, Sovereign class, and Akira class. Allthough they are not named this way, they are quite similar to the Federations equivalents. As a result, the Saurian Empire has enormous firepower, and is evenly matched to the Dominion.
After the attack on Terra, the Saurians choose a new tactic. Their focus changes from retaking occupied territory to taking the offensive. Saurian/Klingon taskforces hit bases and fleetwrfs all around the border, making it harder for the Dominion to take the offensive, since their supply lines are getting longer and more vulnerable to attack. As a retalliation, a Klingon/Saurian taskforce goes through the wormhole and travels under cloak to the founders homeworld, and destroys the great link. Dominion forces in the Alpha quadrant are devastated by this news, and their morale plummits.
Also, a new shiptype is developed, the Prometheus class. These ships are more formidable than any other of the Saurians ship classes, and are build in the hundreds. The ships possess a new sort of propulsion, called the quantum slipstreaam drive. This enables the Saurians to sneak behind Dominion defenses, attack the target and get out before any reinforcement arrives.
Pressure is mounting on the forces that control occupied territory, and they retreat to the planets Betazed and Benzar, where they fortify their positions, since there is no chance reinforcements will come very soon. In the meantime, the bulk of the Saurian and Klingon forces keep attacking the Dominion, and invade several Cardassian systems. Taking the hardest blow, the Cardassians grow tired of warfare, and the Cardassian forces are at the brink of rebelling against their masters. Dominion resistance is still heavy however, and often stalemates are reached. The war is well within it's third year, when the Saurians and Klingons see an opening and immediately comprise a large fleet dat attacks Cardassia. During the battle in the Cardassian system the resistance on the planet commits large acts of sabotage which infuriates the Dominion. After bombing a huge city on the planet as retalliation, the Cardassian forces finally have had enough and switch sides. The Dominion order the destruction of the Cardassian race, and most major Cardassian planets suffer immense, with casualties up to the hundreds of millions, on Cardassia Prime it even exceeds one billion. It doesn't change the outcome, and the planet falls to the Saurians and Klingons. This is a heavy blow to the Dominion, who now leave all occupied Cardassian territory. An agreement is reached between the two vicorious powers, who divide Cardassian teritory amongs themselves. The Klingons get about 60%, in return the Saurians get Cardassia Prime. The Cardassian Union now definitively ceases to exist, since the Saurians start the same colonisation process as they did with all their other subjects.
The Dominion fall back to their own planets and Breen space. The Saurians finally invade Benzar and Betazed, and drive the Jem'Hadar forces away. Both planets are devastated during this campaign. At the new border with the Dominion it is quiet for months, while both partys are consolidating their positions and lick their wounds. The Saurians and Klingons are determined to end the Dominion threat once and for all, while the Dominion fight with everything they got now their own existence is at stake. Dominion attempts to negotiate about peace lead to nothing, and the Saurians and Klingons go at the offensive once more. If it wasn't a total war already, the conflict now turns into one. The battles are bloody, and the Dominion make their attackers bleed for ever kilometer of territory they take. Slowly but inevitable the Suarian alliance captures the Dominion planets, and after 5 years of war the Dominion finally surrender. The victors allow the Dominion to evacuate all their people from the planets, and lead them back to the Gamma quadrant, to rebuild what is left of the Dominion there. The Breen lost most of their fleet during the last acts of the war, but are not occupied, due to the fact Saurian and Klingon forces are stretched to the limit. Instead, terms are imposed on them not to re-arm.
What remains now, is the slow process of rebuilding the worlds who suffered under warfare, consolidate the new territorys, and further develop the new quantum slipstream drive.....
