Alnschloss K'Bentayr picture and Kelvin uniform

I believe it's from the Star Trek magazine.
If I'm not mistaken, it's the best shot we got from him/her/whatever yet. Quite interesting.

Oh, that's very nicely done. Really can't wait to see this flick on video.

I'm not sure how I feel about having all these other aliens serving in Starfleet now. I always thought there was something cool about Spock being the only one in those early years (or at least that's the impression I got anyway).

Now he's just one alien among dozens probably.

I think he was the first Vulcan at the Academy, but he was never the only alien.

Is that according to TOS or other sources? Because I don't remember any references to other alien officers made during the series. Although I could be wrong...

And yeah I knew about the Intrepid, but I figured Starfleet just loaned Vulcan one of their ships or something, and those Vulcans weren't necessarily Starfleet officers (it doesn't exactly seem like normal practice for Starfleet to staff an entire ship with just one group of aliens).

In any case, the impression I got was that the writers really wanted to emphasize Spock as a unique presence and a bit of an outcast on the ship. Having a bunch of other aliens running around kind of dilutes that I think.

there are a couple of things that indicate that intrepid was indeed part of starfleet.
she is being repaired and mentioned in the same with the other starships in courtmartial.
she is getting her orders from a starbase.

gene in different interviews and in one book at least indicated that there would be ships full of aliens.
that most ships were primary for one alien species due to issues of climate ect..

but there would be different species spread out among the ships.

and yeah what you saw in the motion picture and the animated series was because money was no longer as much as an issue.
and just painting some one wasnt just cheap nor easy.

plus kelvin is obviously a primarily a human crew.

Well Immunity Syndrome aired after Court Martial, so it's very possible the writers hadn't decided on the all-Vulcan thing at that point.

And I know Gene had lots of interesting ideas and concepts about Trek, but I'm just going by what was shown in the actual series.

But oh well, it's just a minor thing. And I suppose it does make him pretty special and unique that he's one of the last of his species now. So that sense of isolation is still there pretty strong.

Talking of aliens on the Kelvin...I didn't like the nurse with the CG eyes. She looked like a bad photoshop of a manga character.

Barney Burman – Prosthetic Makeup Designer for ‘Star Trek’

TM: Can you tell us whether or not you based the Kelvin security officer on Arex from the animated Star Trek series? What else can you tell us about Alnschloss K’Bentayr?

BB: The character of Alnschloss was not inspired nor based on Arex. I hope no one is too disappointed. It was based on an original design by the film’s amazing creature designer and a brilliant artist, Neville Page. JJ liked the design Neville had and asked if I could realize it as a character. It was the first alien to work on first day of shooting and it wowed everybody. It was further brought to life by Kasia Kowalczyk, a terrific actress and director out of New York.

He/she/it looks great. I liked the random aliens we saw. Interesting that his/her uniform is different to everyone else's.

An homage to Spock having a higher collar in some of TOS and again in TMP?

Yeah I've always wondered about that. Did Nimoy just have a really long neck or something? :D

I realize he had to have his own special costume to accomodate the ears and makeup, but you'd think it wouldn't be that hard to match it with the others. That costume in WNMHGB was the biggest monstrosity of all.

The costume was made so that it could be quickly fastened after the makeup was applied, and undone again between scenes. They did manage to match his shirt with everyone else's by the time of TOS.

Similarly, in TMP, the black "Chinese" collar needed to be removable so that it could be replaced after each scene, without Nimoy's whole uniform shirt having to be laundered.

Notice that a similar trick (higher uniform collar) was used for Mendon the Benzite in TNG's "A Matter of Honor".

I've used the trick myself over the years!
