Allow myself to introduce.... myself.

"Second Chances"

Riker encounters a "transporter duplicate" of himself.

How would YOU react to a duplicate of yourself? Riker seems to take in stolid stride and treats "himself" like any other brash, bull-headed subordinate. It doesn't "ring true" to me it would seem to me that Riker should be less of an ass to himself.

The "duplicate" Riker should also act, I feel, a little more like the S1/2 Riker and less like the later-TNG Riker.

I think that most people would act in a similar manner. For some it might sound like a good idea, but I think there would be some sort of resentment towards each other.

It would be a bit disconcerting, of course. Perhaps the writers felt that Wil would feel threatened and should get defensive like many people would. While I doubt it was being considered at the time, Wil might have been frightened a bit, too, since now there was someone else who knew about the Pegasus incident. Probably not, but we all have incidents and choices in our past that we don't wish to revisit. A duplicate like Tom throws them all right back in your face all at once.

If I ever encountered an exact duplicate of myself, I'd punch the f*cker for being better-looking than me.

I realise it woudl have made shooting scheduling a nightmare, but I always wished they'd gone with 'no beard' Riker for his transporter twin. Obviously, it's easily explained away, but just to make it really seem like we'd got a duplicate of pre-season 1 Riker rather than a duplicate created that morning before breakfast.

You could also say that the stranded Riker appeared well nourished considering the conditions he had been living in, but that would have been too hard to get around for obvious reasons!

I don't think the duplicate Riker should be more like S1/2 Riker. This Riker never stood up to Captain DeSoto about going on away missions, and he had been stranded in an outpost alone for many years.

Critique what they're wearing.

:guffaw:

I always thought it was ironic that Riker met a duplicate of himself later in the show since in Up the Long Ladder he'd destroyed a clone of himself. In Aramaic the name Thomas means twin. Sometimes I wonder how much of all this the writers had in mind or is it all a happy accident.

The name was revealed in Second Chances IIRC, so quite possibly it was a deliberate in joke. Originally, he was just 'T.' to hark back to Kirk, according to the TNG Companion.

Happy accident probably, but the TNG writers were pretty good at running with happy accidents once they spotted them.

That duplicate thinks he's better than me, and he's probably right!!!

Seriously, if I had to deal with myself as another individual, I'd probably observe all of my own flaws and become a drastically and possibly tragically different person.

Ugh. Wouldn't want to see myself, myself.

I met an identical twin today whose twin died some time ago, and he was mourning his loss and the loss of his living reflection.
