Spoilers All Things STAR WARS - News, Speculation & Spoilers Thread

IIRC, Shadow Lord is meant to be full half hour episodes and maybe even over multiple seasons. It's basically meant to take over as the du jour animated Star Wars series now that Bad Batch is finished.
Glad to hear it, I was hoping that was the case.

'On April 30th, 2027, we’ll celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Wars with a re-release of the 1977 classic back for a limited time, in theaters everywhere.

Part of Lucasfilm’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration, Star Wars: A New Hope will play in theaters over the May the 4th holiday, also known as Star Wars Day.

Switch on your targeting computer and keep your eyes on StarWars.com for more details, including when and where to buy tickets to this once-in-a-generation event.'

No word if this will be the unaltered theatrical cut from 1977 - or the 2019 SE 'Maclunkey' cut.

Still, it is Star Wars on the big screen. :techman:

It would feel more appropriate if it was the original version, but there's probably still a decent sticking to Lucas's refusal to let anything other the new edits to be shown on a large scale.

As I've said many times over the years; it would be prohibitively expensive to remaster (or rather de-master) ANH to arbitrarily match one of the half-dozen iterations that movie went through prior to '97, and yes it would need to be remastered to make it presentable for the general audience. I mean they just did a very limited exhibition of an vintage print, and people still complained about the quality. The general audience would slate it.

On the other hand; I also don't see LF making any further significant alternations without George's oversight. For better or worst, the maclunkey cut (the last one George made for the aborted run at a 3D theatrical re-release) is likely what it will be from here on out.

Yeah you're probably right, but I just it just seems to me if they're ever going to rerelease the something closer to the original version, or at least the last pre-Special Edition version, the 50th would be a big enough deal that it might be worth it.
I honestly have no problem with the Special Editions, at least up to the 2004 DVDs, since that's the last versions of them I've seen, but I know a lot of people have been desperate to get a non-Special Edition release and it would be nice to see them finally get that.

There’s a version where Greedo sucks Han off under the table.

Those lips were made for it.

He wants to get paid afterwards so Han shoots him and then Chewie shits on him.

Hopefully it will be reinstated.

Then it appears you have been wrong many times over the years... ;)

It is certainly not 'prohibitively expensive' to 'remaster' Star Wars (or ESB, or ROTJ)... there are an array of options to choose from in restoring or preserving the theatrical OT; some more expensive than others - from starting in the ballpark of $120,000 US.

Plus, what makes you think this hasn't been completed already (for archival/preservation reasons - if not for a planned release)?

A little more reading on the subject (with context) from people with knowledge on the subject...

https://savestarwars.com/faq.html#3 (from ~2010; before Lucas sold the company)

The 'half-dozen itinerations' prior to 97SE? You refer to the difference such as with the 35mm or the 70mm, mono or stereo, the 85 mix, the 93 mix, magnetic audio, and various other audio options... yeah, that's been accomplished for inclusion on fan-made preservations for many years now (including more subtitles and audio language options than at the UN). Lucasfilm (or whoever they outsourced such a project to) certainly wouldn't have an issue putting that together.

As for the recent BFI screening of the IB print... it is worth pointing out a minority of the viewers seemingly had issues with the quality... the Telegraph journalist's sub editor was certainly more interested in generating clicks and 'engagement' farming... than actually reading through the article. I guess they may be the one who inserted the disingenuous 'comparison image' in there? An image from the 16mm fan preservation Puggo Grande of Star Wars - and NOT from the IB Technicolor print screening at the BFI - as the article infers.

Many others at the BFI screening seemed to enjoy the screening just fine and were impressed with the quality, yes?

Given the feedback from the general public who have acquired the lower-sourced yet quality 4K77/80/83 fan preservations (available with or without DNR)... they seemingly have no issue with the image quality either... would a better-sourced official release have a different reaction? Probably not - if done right. (though they'll always be contrarians and people making claims not really knowing what they're talking about).

Depending on how much effort was put into such an actual release... it could certainly blow away any previous release outside the original theatrical showings - and be far more impressive than the fairly underwhelming and substandard releases of the 2019SE, 2011SE, 2004SE home releases - and even the 1997SE prints themselves. Especially if sourced from the OCN.

Hokey revisions and strange DVDs are no match for a quality theatrical preservation scan at your side.

I think I've seen that - for some reason it had lots of Twi'leks in it as well? Must be a another new Special Edition... ;)
