Spoilers All Things STAR WARS - News, Speculation & Spoilers Thread

I work for an archive. Preservation is the name of the game. Preserving films in their original form is important not only for the sake of the film's history itself, but for understanding it in the context of the culture of the time. Any work of art is as much about when it was made as what it is. Any imperfections are part of the story.

I could really get into this more, but I can see I'd be shouting into the wind.

I value your work. You're doing exactly who I want to be pressing film. Archiving it, preserving it, is the work of historians that should be supported.

I don't believe this is why many fans want a 4k release. I believe it's because DVD is no longer good enough for watching a film. It's visual greed not preservation in my humble opinion.

So, are you calling people who'd like to buy something that you don't want to buy greedy? :wtf:

Visual greed. A desire for a different visual experience. Dissatisfaction with current options.

I'm trying to understand buying something that has already been available to purchase again. It's damn confusing to me that something is available to buy so I go and buy it again? :wtf:

You're on the wrong track. My advice would be to stop trying to speak for other people. They're more than capable of speaking for themselves.

If you don't want it, whatever Star Wars media it is that comes on the market, no one's going to make you buy it.

So why do you want it in 4k?

I'm sure others are willing to speak for themselves. I just am very curious as to why 4K is so damn important to be available on the market?

Seeing the original in 4K is the closest thing to seeing it on film. At smaller sizes like on DVD and with compression, it's not the same experience.

Especially as it is widely known the numerous issues with the only previous official release of the original theatrical cuts on DVD (the 2006 'GOUT' DVDs - a lazy and obsolete release - even back in 2006; using the master from a 1993 Laserdisc release - and riddled with DNR + other problems)...

The theatrical versions did NOT look like these images (above & below) presented in the 2006 GOUT DVD...

Edit: Also, as an aside, a number of people of late have reported their 2006 GOUT DVD 'bonus discs' are no longer working - the DVD players (both standalone players and those installed on desktop PCs etc) can not able to read them - and so are unable to be viewed (something a few other DVD collectors can attest to).

a snippet...

'There is a new record for the most expensive "Star Wars" item in the galaxy!

An original painting for the 1977 film, "Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope," sold Wednesday at Heritage Auctions for $3,875,000. Bidding began at $1 million.'

&

'Following the film’s release, the painting was hung in the office of producer Gary Kurtz, who later moved it to his home in the early 1980s, where it remained prior to this auction.

“It has been an honor to have this wonderful painting with us all these years,” Kurtz's daughter Melissa added in a statement. “It serves as a warm reminder of that incredible experience — being part of the making of a film that has touched so many lives.”'

Could Han Solo get any smaller?

It's one of several reasons to make high-definition transfers of films in their original form and to make those available to people so they can grok them for what they were at the time of their release.
Interesting
@Christmas Canon Spock , I understand that you don’t value decent looking versions as much as some of us and that’s fine. For some of us, it just makes the experience more enjoyable. As you are known to say, mileage.
I'm just trying to understand what makes current things so unacceptable. Maurice puts it in a way I kind of get that it's an attempt to see it as it was presented in the theaters.

It's a fascinating idea and you're right it isn't one I fully grasp.

Without exception, when scenes in the 1977 film were padded, in my opinion, it saps the energy out, it wrecks the pacing, it ruins the music rhythm. That's just scratching the surface of why I prefer the original version(s).

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the current releases of Star Wars, per se. They are the way that Lucas wants them to be seen. Cool.

But just like with Star Trek: The Motion Picture and its 4K release from a few years ago, giving me the option of watching either the theatrical cut or the special longer version is a nice bonus.

As for Star Wars: The DVDs from 2006 look like shit. It doesn’t make me want to watch them. I have access to the 4K77 version which is great but I have no problem with spending money to see the original Star Wars in theater and purchase a home release. It has been many years since I’ve seen the original version on the big screen and I was so little, I certainly don’t remember it. I also want to share the original version with my son.

The original release of Star Wars won Academy Awards. It started ILM. It is historic. It should be available. I don’t think anyone is suggesting getting rid of the current versions. Hell, I’d probably watch the current version more frequently than the original version. I just want to have the option. And not on VHS or a substandard transfer from 20 years ago from a 30 year old source.

Again, mileage.

Hopefully closer to any of the versions in the theaters than Burtt's redo on the SE.

I know everybody hates on the CG aliens and Han getting shot at and Jedi Rocks (oh, Jedi Rocks...*shudder*), but the most inexplicable, annoying SE change for me (and this might've been a post-97 change) was mixing up the lightsaber sounds. Originally, Luke's green saber made a unique screech when it ignited,* but in the special edition of ESB, Luke's blue saber makes that noise at the beginning of the Cloud City fight. I don't know why they'd dick around with specific objects having a specific sonic identity like that, it's not as if they also had it so the Falcon occasionally made the TIE fighter elephant trumpet when it passed by to punch things up.

*Also confusingly, the video game "Jedi: Fallen Order" had the green lightsaber color make that distinct sound, but that detail was overlooked/omitted/changed for the sequel, "Jedi: Survivor," though all the different blade colors did still have unique hums.

Mileage indeed. I don't think the 06 looks like shit and in fact just watched it. I don't think the historical value of the film goes down because it's not commercially available. I don't have a desire for 4k.

I guess I won't get it because it's the usual idea of current things are substandard. Is theater experience the standard? I just watched the Sound of Music in theaters and enjoyed it as much as watching it at home.

Call me weird I guess.

Jedi Rocks is a historic atrocity.

But since you brought up mixing up sounds:

When watching the DVD of ROTJ I noticed there's a Tusken Raider sound during the skiff battle sequence. Was it always like that?

By the 2006 DVDs, I mean particularly the bonus versions. They are hard for me to watch. You have different values. That doesn’t make you weird. That makes you have different values.

I think nowadays the theatrical and home experiences are different, but in this day and age, equally important. 20 years ago, that was a question with a much different answer. 20 years from now, it might be a different answer again.
