ALL MIMSY WERE THE BOROGROVES-Round Robin

Mistral

Vice Admiral
Admiral
and so we begin Mr. Scorpio's Round Robin attempt. Here's the title and intro. Good luck!

ALL MIMSY WERE THE BOROGROVES

INTRO:

Kirk sat down on a low stool that had apparently been cobbled together out of old ammunition boxes. He made sure he didn’t lean back, as the walls of the shelter were made from broken sections of concrete and twisted metal reinforcement rods stuck out at odd angles. Accepting a cup of tea from his host, he was careful to avoid the chips in the rim as he drank.

“Thank you, Belar,” Kirk said, “I appreciate your hospitality.” Wisps of woodsmoke from the cooking fire at one end of the shelter escaped the crude chimney and swirled around him.

“It is I who should thank you, friend Kirk. With the recovery aid from your Federation we here on Mallus may actually restore our society in my lifetime!” The joy in the man’s voice was evident. “After the Invaders came and bombed our planet they stripped most of the useful resources that remained and took their leave. What few sociologists we had that managed to survive the bombing and the radiation predicted it would take us seven generations to rebuild. It has only been twenty years, but your arrival bodes well for our future.” He raised his battered metal mug in a salute. Kirk nodded back, slightly embarrassed at the other’s enthusiasm.

“We’ll do what we can,” he said. At that moment Dr. McCoy entered through the shelter’s crude door.

“Jim, I thought you’d want to know-the radiation levels in the surrounding region are higher than they should be but survivable. I think with proper monitoring, Belar’s people would do well to make this the center of their rebuilding efforts. ‘Course I’m just a country doctor. I’d like to get a few experts in here from the Asian Reclamation Project to double-check my results.”

“That makes sense, Bones. Contact Spock and have him transmit your request immediately.” McCoy nodded and headed out to make the call. Kirk turned back towards Belar and opened his mouth to speak. Before he could, a massive explosion made the crude shelter jump. Dust rained down from the ceiling as Kirk and Belar were thrown to the ground. As the ringing in his ears cleared, Kirk could make out the alert beep of his communicator. Shaking off his daze, he helped Belar back to his feet before answering the call.

“Kirk here. What the hell is going on, Spock?”

The Vulcan’s voice was unperturbed, as always, as he replied.

“Captain, a group of three ships of unknown configuration has just entered the Mallus system. Two are currently attacking the Enterprise, while a third has entered the atmosphere near your location. I suggest you seek shelter immediately as their intentions are obviously hostile.” In the distance came the sounds of further explosions.

“Yes, Spock, shelter sounds like a good idea about now,” Kirk commented dryly. “Can you hold off the attackers?”

“They would seem to have inferior weapon systems, Captain. While concentrated fire may cause us some distress I do not intend to allow them to keep their concentration.”

“Very well, Spock, keep me informed. Kirk out.” Closing his communicator, he turned back to Belar. “Is there somewhere we can go to wait this out? It may be a few minutes before Enterprise can deal with the ship that’s bombarding us.”

Belar nodded. “Yes, we can go to the caves outside the camp. My people know to flee there where it is safe. We have been prepared for the Invaders return for a long time,” he added grimly.

“Hopefully, it will work out a little differently this time. Lead on, my friend,” Kirk requested, gesturing towards the doorway.

Very good start Mistrel..

For whatever reason, when I read TOS books, or a story like you just wrote, I can easily see, in my mind, what is going on. I can never get into the other Trek series books in that way...I say that because I could really see what was going on there in that scene with Kirk/Bellar and then how it played out. You could even see the cut away scene with Spock on the bridge conversing with Kirk..well done...

Now, just incase I am missing something..is Bellar, and his world Mallus, from a previous episode or book? Or is this a totally new planet....

Anyway, great start..CEJAY is next up to bat, and then Chris, and then me.

BATTER-UP!!!

Its brand new-in fact, I left off descriptions of the exterior world and Belar just to leave it open for the other writers....

(NEW PART by Robert Scorpio)

Kirk and McCoy were soon running at a pretty good pace, and followed their hosts as they crisscrossed the forest that surrounded the main village. Although they were, in essence, running for their lives, Kirk still took the time to take in the beautiful surroundings. There were even stacks of wood already arranged in organized ways so as to make building, or the need for more firewood, easy to do.

Kirk also looked back to make sure Leonard McCoy was keeping up. He purposely ran a little slower so as not to make the doctor have to keep up with his usual pace.

“Don’t wait for me Jim,” McCoy said with hurried breaths, “Spock would never let me live it down if you got killed because I couldn’t keep up with you.”

Kirk smiled, “That may be true,” Kirk said back to him, “but I would never let myself live it down if I didn’t make sure you made it.”

They ran further into the forest, and soon they approached the caves that Belar had no doubt been speaking of.

“In here, friend Kirk.” Belar pointed as he ran into the cave.

Kirk and McCoy followed.

Meanwhile, two of the other healthier Mallusians didn’t follow the rest of the fleeing group into the caves. Instead, they climbed to of the nondescript trees that were near the caves. Once they were near the top of the trees, something strange happened. The set of hills that the caves were apart of shimmered, and then, water seemed to cascade over the rock formations. The cave entrances were obscured by the fake water and new rock formations. The real rocks and real cave openings were shrouded in an elaborate cloak that provided the perfect shield from the oncoming aerial assault.

The two men in the top of the trees pulled on several vines that released heavy logs that swung down from the trees, with branches tied on them. The branches swooshed through the ground below, obscuring the tracks of those who ran for cover.

Kirk watched this entire activity from inside the cloak field. McCoy shook his head in disbelief.

“Not a bad idea,” McCoy said, “but how bad can these Invaders be to inspire this kind of fear.”

Kirk nodded in agreement. “Not only that Bones,” Kirk said softly, “but where did they get this kind of Cloaking Technology. Nothing like this was mentioned in my mission briefing back on Starbase 12.”

The first two installments were both very good - kudos to Mistral and RobertScorpio. Nice imagery and character work, thus far - plus some elements of mystery.

Thanks LoneRedshirt...by the way, my new bowling league starts this week..our team name? Four Red Shirts...

CEJAY has our next installment. And like i told him, this is all good fun..a good excerise if you will. So if you have joined the rotation, just wait your turn. And remember, just add your 500-700 words or so and let it go..kind of like a game of tag...will be fun to see where a combination of writing styles can take a story....

And, yes, I promise..NO immortal flies named Wazzo.

Wait, so how will this work?

I have sent you a private message Vixen. For anyone else, just send me a private message that you want to join the writing rotation. I will let you know that I got your message back that you want to write. Then, just read the story as it is released. WHen it is your turn I will inform you by private mail...you will have one day to add 500-700 words to the story..thats it...no biggie...

Interesting development with the mysterious cloaking device, and the mysterious attackers of course. I guess there is going to be a lot of mystery in this story as nobody really knows where it'll go. I guess that's the beauty of it.

(New Part by Vixen)

McCoy leaned over and whispered back. "Didn't Belar say that the Invaders stole everything of worth?" With a grim look, Kirk nodded. Something isn't adding up for me here he thought, glancing around at the shelter they were in. Much like the place where the group had been drinking earlier, everything was battered and dingy and looked like it was thrown together hastily. Yet despite the impermanence and the fact that everything looked like it was just grabbed out of desperation, everyone was moving about orderly and organized, if not brusquely. Belar was standing a few feet away, coordinating with some other Mallusians. Brushing some dirt off of his uniform, Kirk strode over. "Ah, friend Kirk! It is good to see that you and Doctor McCoy did not suffer any harm during our travel here." With an eager look, Belar gestured. "We will be most safe here." Crossing his arms, Kirk tilted his head. "That's definitely a good thing. I don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth, Belar, but where exactly did you get the cloaking technology being used? I don't remember anyone mentioning that." Shrugging, Belar turned away slightly. "We managed to salvage it from a downed Invader ship. It proved difficult to use, but it is most effective." Opening his mouth to say more, he was cut off by the ground shaking slightly and dust falling from the ceiling of the cavern. The Invaders were beginning their attack.

The Enterprise was rocked slightly as another enemy salvo collided with the shields. "Shields down to 72%, sir!" Sulu reported from his position. "Mr. Chekov, acquire a target lock and fire," Spock calmly said from the captain's chair. "Mr. Spock, the enemy ships are jamming our transmissions. I cannot contact Captain Kirk or anyone else unless we move out of jamming range." Adjusting the Feinberger receiver in her ear, Uhura attempted to circumvent the jamming, while the rest of the bridge crew continued with defending the ship. The viewscreen showed the enemy ships rearranging into another attack formation. The ships were a dull black-green colored ovoid, with a squat appearance. Small square protrusions arranged in a random sequence on the hull contained the torpedo launchers and phased-fire emplacements. As one of them opened fire, pale green beams lanced out and hit the shields, causing relatively little damage. What they lacked in firepower, however, they made up for in speed, maneuverability, and sturdiness. "Mister Sulu, move the ship for coordinates 43 by 120, mark. The enemy vessels are merely keeping us occupied and away from the planet." "But, vhy Commander? Ve have not acted in a hostile manner, nor do ve even know who the enemy are!" Chekov said in a surprised voice. "That, Ensign, is what we will soon find out," Spock replied in a quiet voice. The bridge lapsed into an uneasy silence, broken only by the whine of phaser banks being used. Suddenly, Uhura spoke up. "Commander, there are three more ships coming from the outer edge of the system!"

Very good VIXEN..very good indeed!!!...Can't wait to see what happens next...Kirk has a mystery on the planet and spock has some interesting tactical questions in space...star trek at its best!!

great job Vixen! So far this little game is playing out real well. Everyone has added to it without getting all weird and off the storyline.

I agree..it is progressing like a natural STAR TREK story...I like this idea cause its like an ALL-STAR game. We all write our own various stories on this site. But with this we all get to add this or that. Fun..can't wait to see what happens next..

Its a shame the UT guys are so busy-I'd love to see what TLR and his twisted sense of humor could do with the dialogue! Or Dnoth-no, strike that, Dnoth would kill off Kirk or something violent like that.;)

A trio of Federation vessels entered the system and engaged the aliens attempting to keep the Constitution-Class Enterprise busy.

Two of them were identical.

Underslung nacelles, weapons module mounted on a rollbar over a low n' wide combination saucer section/secondary hull. The third was a new design with a visible chunk bitten out of it's cresent-moon shaped saucer section in the front, no visible secondary hull and nacelles with bizarre-looking winglets on wide swept supports. It's nacelle supports drawing power from a catamaran style aft hull sporting upgraded impulse engines.

"A welcome reprieve, indeed."

Sulu cocked an eyebrow toward Spock and concentrated on helping Chekov take full advantage of the momentary distraction.

'If I didn't know any better, I'd swear Spock was sweating there for a second!'

"The first vessel's code registers as an Akula-Class and the others are still too far out to get a fix, but they appear to be Starfleet in origin. The computer registers the unknown contacts on our sensors as unsuccessful pre-Federation first contacts. Commanding officer - Captain Jonathan Archer of the NX-01 Enterprise, circa 2151."

I didn't expect the unknown contacts to be Federation-well done. I don't recognize the description of the third ship, though.

Yes..a very unexpected turn of events...we have made our first lap through the rotation...all those who were unable to add their part due to time constraints, you will be up for your next turn very soon...

Mistrel..you are up to bat. Can't wait to see where you take us next..

Thank you. I was describing pre-Miranda-Class kitbashes using Connie parts I've seen at various TOS/TMP/TAS fandom sites including here at TrekBBS. The Akula is a version of the Akyazi-Class starship. I was debating with myself over mnentioning the NCC 1000 version of the Bonaventure. I was thinking the unknown (alien) contacts would be interesting if they were the un-named aliens from the ENTERPRISE episode, "Silent Enemy".
