The original series used the term "landing party" for those heroes and cannon fodder who went down to the planet week after week. Starting with The Next Generation, they started using the phrase "away team" exclusively. Which do you prefer? Personally, though "away team" sounds more militaristic, I like "landing party". Probably for nostalgic reasons, I suppose.

I always thought "Away Team" sounded a bit lame to me. Landing Party is more in line with the navel tradition.

Away Team is more versatile. They're not always landing on a planet. Often they're boarding another ship or a space station. I suppose, depending on the circumstances, you could call it either a Landing Party or a Boarding Party, but Boarding Party has a hostile connotation.

I've always lobbied for "Folks What Aren't On Teh Ship", personally. :bolian:

But I prefer "Away Team" - versatile, snappy, one-size-fits-all, makes sense.

I voted for Away Team - not everything that originates from TOS is better than the rest of Trek.

"Away team" does sound a little awkward to the ears, but so does a lot of real naval jargon. "Stand to" is a bit of :wtf: too. And what is a stunsel, anyway?

Landing Party. Away team always sounded like they were going on a camping trip or something to me. Landing part conjures images of a ship landing on unexplored territory for the first time.
