aliens ruined by TREK

Anwar said:
B&B didn't "neuter" them, it started in TNG itself and UPN's insistence on Borg stuff to get the ratings up didn't help matters.
I don't think TNG neutered them. The Borg still sent chills up my spine in "I, Borg". The "Descent" Borg weren't part of the Collective and I thought the idea of rogue vicious Borg unleashed on the galaxy was particularly scary.

FC had the Queen. An idea I didn't object to in idea but in execution found disappointing. Instead of a Locutus type figure she was this emotional femme fatale proned to the same sort of fits of anger and scorn fo being rebuked by Locutus.

I thought they were scary in Unity, Scorpion, Raven, Hope and Fear, Drone and up until the last ten or so minutes of Dark Frontier.

After that they weren't scary but were used in some entertaining stories like Unimatrix Zero or at least Part I.

when almost EVERY KLINGON we saw was a lying, cowardly shit.

Uh, yeah, except for maybe Kurn. Kemprec, Martok, Kang, Kor, Grilka, Sirella, Mara, Gorkon, and so forth and so on. You guys who love to jump on the 'we hate Klingons' bandwagon ought to try watching the various series once in a while rather than simply responding mindlessly.

To the original question - Species 8472 no contest. Few other alien species got such a cool, other-worldy introduction only to be turned into f****** Boothby.

Tulin said:In fact, the whole "this species is known for ........ human trait" got old by the time the Ferengi were presented as the scheming Jews of ST. Trust me, I am one of the most politically incorrect people you will ever meet but the whole "categorizing by one trait" just smacked of being juvenile, simplistic and patronizing.
Or anti-semitic, even.

But DS9 was too sophisticated for that, right? ;)

I don't see why someone would connect the semitic race to the Ferengi, but if you manage to do that feat, I'm sure you can with some imagination connect any race on Earth to any alien in Star Trek.

They are what you make them out to be. I never thought they were black stereotypes, I thought they were aliens with a certain culture. Yes they were black. Are all white villains stereotypes too?

Jonathan Frakes thinks "Code of Honor" is racist.

Gene Roddenberry fired its director during production.

I think you should learn more about stereotypes before doubting that they have been used in Star Trek.

I know a LOT about stereotypes, My parents are from South Korea and I have been told over and over how I don't act asian or that I'm a twinkie. So trust me I know stereotypes.

But one question: Why should I care what Jonathan Frakes and Gene Roddenberry think is racist? I rather make my own mind up.

So who told you Ferengi is anti semitic?

I don't think your heritage is at all relevant to WESTERN stereotypes about Jews and blacks.

But I apologize that the conversation has become personal. I don't think it is productive to continue it. Feel free to search google for more about the Jews and Ferengi.

I wrote it because you seemed to think I didn't know anything about Stereotypes. Quote from you: "I think you should learn more about stereotypes" So I explained that I have a lot of experience of people stereotyping me.

First off, you wrote Ferengi were anti semitic, but now it's only jews? Both Arabs and Jews are semites so you have to make up your mind.

Secondly I like to make up my own mind if something is stereotypical or not, and I certainly won't have to study it on the internet. Tell me did you decide for yourself that Ferengi were jews or did you read it first?

Seriously if I have to look it up on internet maybe that in itself shows how far fetched it is.

I've never really seen the Ferengi as Jews, but then again i've never really bought into that stereotype view of Jews.

Which is why I apologized for making the argument personal.

LOL. That's purely semantic bullshit, but I guess you're an anti-semite then, since you believe that the Arabs created a ruthless religion.

Oh, there is ample evidence of anti-semitism in South Korea. More than 10 million copies sold since 1987.

Is that why you you're anti-semitic?
Secondly I like to make up my own mind if somethin is stereotypical or not,
You think Islam was spread ruthlessly. That's anti-Arab, and by your own definition, anti-semitic. So how could you possibly judge whether the Ferengi are a Jewish stereotype?

Ok I can see you can't debate me with arguments so you have to resort to insults. I'll let you do that alone but I'll correct you some.

All arabs aren't muslims
All muslims aren't arabs

See if you can figure it out yourself

You were the one who said Islam was spread ruthlessly.
Islam originated among Arabs.
Ergo, Arabs are ruthless.

Figure it out yourself, anti-semite.

I'm going to quote this to remind you what the topic is about:

Can you think of an alien race that you think the writing on TREK let down?

If you're not talking about this, knock it off or else I'm closing this thread.

What the hell? I'm not tollerating this crap right now.

One warning for flaming. Comments via PM

I have to admit, I never thought the Ferengi were written well, and their transition into purely profiteering cowards didn't help.

Personally I always thought the Ferengi were made to resemble the Chinese... for various reasons

a) They use chopsticks to eat
b) They emphasize "lobes" to denote potential for fortune and ability at business
c) They're profiteering (okay, most cultures produce profiteering but there are some that are stereotyped to be even more so)
