One very bad thing for us humans is that we formed on the periphery of the galaxy. We're all the way out there, very far from the galactic core (presumably where far greater chances of other intelligent life exists). So... we're very alone. And it's highly unlikely we'll ever see other intelligent life, given what we know today.
The first big problem we face is this: ENERGY. We have to invent some way of harnessing atomic energy without any ill side effects. We discovered this less than 80 years ago. That's nothing compared to the history of humanity. Given enough time, we may eventually unlock the energy problem and find the secrets that allow us to harness incredible energies, far beyond what we can imagine today. Once we have this...
Next item: FOLDING SPACE (or wormhole creation). Let's face it, faster than light travel requires seriously enormous energies. And that's just to get going. You have an equal energy requirement for stopping! I think the only real plausible way to travel will be through wormholes. YES, it will take enormous energies to do it, but you place a wormhole gate of some kind near a star, and that star can fuel whatever the requirements are for that gate. Then after mapping out your next destination, you bring with you the gate creation technology and set these gates up at every star you wish to visit. The only real bugger of a problem will be moving around solar systems at a decent rate. But we may eventually get that problem solved too.
Assuming of course we are able to fashion all the right components to make ships and devices to reliably do what we need, this may be the way we are able to get beyond our solar system... to places very far away. Maybe even the galactic core.
