Hi! This will be a thread where I post up original alien designs and some info on their species too! Feel free to suggest idea about an alien race's name, history, temperament etc.
I've been playing around with an avian/plant hybrid type alien called the Kriatt.
Since I decided to design them with no mouths and no particularly obvious way to ingest food, I think it would be interesting if they survived through photosynthesis, i.e. they absorb sunlight and convert that to energy through their petal/leaf-like downs.
Their crown at the very forefront of the head is tough, cartilage probably, and they have two eyes veering up along each side of their heads.
In the very, very distant past, they conversed among themselves via intricate patterns of movement of their 'feathers' and a series of nasal chirps but over time they developed strong empathic abilities that ultimately became telepathy. This telepathy is sometimes incompatible with the mentalities of other aliens, making it difficult for them to communicate with certain species without the assistance of translator.
On their biology, the majority of the species are born male, and with colourful downs. There are very few females, who are usually born with duller colours. Donations from both males and females of the species are required once they have reached adulthood by their government in order to maintain a stable population ratio.
Because of this, adoption is very common, and it is not unusual to find entire families made up of Kriatt not related by blood. It is quite the rarity to find a Kriatt pair with biological children of their own.
Their home planet is called Kri and the overall temperate is quite humid and hot. Most Kriatt prefer to live in large communities and its fairly common for homes to become multigenerational. Colonization efforts have often gone poorly for the Kriatt, as they have trouble maintaining a sustainable population without medical intervention, thus the entirety of Kriatt civilization is based on their homeworld of Kri. The majority of Kriatt would prefer to stay on their homeworld, but some have been known to leave home to satiate their wanderlust.
Kri attained membership with the Federation in about 2350. Only a small amount of Kriatt have ever joined up with Starfleet due to their difficulty in communicating with some species and indeed finding other species' somewhat unsettling and rambunctious.
Kriatt themselves, personality wise, are often content with quiet and can go for days, sometimes weeks, without a word to another soul. As an empathic species, Kriatt find unnecessary descriptive communication a waste of time and will normally fall back on telepathy if their company simply doesn't understand what they're trying to convey empathically. Their empathic nature makes them quite open amongst each other but unsettled among aliens, who think and feel quite differently from what they're used to.
