News Alec Baldwin Accidentally Shoots & Kills Cinematographer, Wounds Director with Prop Gun

^ Bill was never going to be redeemed. He was always destined to end up on the train to the concentration camp.

And the kids weren't going to be saved, either. Bill tried to save them, but as soon as they ended up in occupied France, their fates were sealed.
Are we sure Landis and/or his people aren’t feeding us a line that the story would have always ended that way? It’s not like he is/was a credible person.

Schwazenegger and Stallone action fests were prone to such accidents. But I wouldn't say BRAINSTORM counts. Natalie Wood's death was not during actual shooting but elsewhere.
We were mentioning films that were finished despite an actor's death, not how, where or when that death occurred.

Alec Baldwin not allowed to drink alcohol, own gun after not guilty plea in ‘Rust’ shooting: These are fairly common conditions of pretrial release for a charge like this but I suspect one of them might be harder on him than the other.

It wouldn't have been in his best interests to lie about that. Even if the characters were always supposed to die, I don't think it affects the criminal case against him one way or the other.

Landis did say that he considered just forgetting the whole thing and cutting out ALL of the footage but decided it would be unfair to Vic Morrow's memory. I suppose that could be construed as trying to drum up sympathy for himself, but I think he actually does have a point. Cutting all the footage would, arguably, be worse.

I was speculating he lied about how it was supposed to end in order to defend the movie, not the criminal case.

“The charges against Alec Baldwin were dismissed without prejudice because a possible malfunction of the gun significantly affects causation with regard to Baldwin, not with regard to Gutierrez. If it is determined that the gun did not malfunction, charges against Mr. Baldwin will proceed. The prosecution anticipates making a final charging decision with regard to Mr. Baldwin within the next sixty days,” prosecutors said in a June court filing.

The fact he (one might argue) lied about pulling the trigger is the kind of thing that police and prosecutors consider in determining whether to charge. OTOH, it doesn't necessarily mean he realized it was not firing blanks.

My personal gut feeling is that they may cut a deal under which the prosecution agrees to file a charge to which he agrees to in advance, with a stipulated sentence of probation or maybe some house arrest.

Prosecutors investigating Rust shooting intend to bring involuntary manslaughter charge against Alec Baldwin before a grand jury

New Mexico prosecutors intend to recharge actor Alec Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the fatal 2021 “Rust” shooting, two sources familiar with the matter tells NBC News.

The source adds that Baldwin’s case will be brought before a grand jury in mid-November. There had been recent discussions of a plea deal, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

One of the sources tells NBC News that after further investigation, prosecutors no longer believe the gun had been modified and have found new evidence that they believe connects Baldwin to recklessness around safety standards on the set.

I'm still not convinced there won't be a plea deal even if he's recharged, in lieu of formal indictment.

Alec Baldwin is headed to trial over the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was killed in 2021 after the actor's prop gun fired a live round of ammunition on the "Rust" film set.

The decision to indict Baldwin was announced Friday after a New Mexico grand jury heard evidence presented by special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis. He was charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter.

"We look forward to our day in court," said Baldwin's attorneys, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, of Quinn Emanuel.

If convicted, Baldwin could face up to 18 months in prison. A trial date has not been set.

Alec Baldwin waved gun around on Rust film set before fatal shooting, court hears

The footage played on Thursday showed Mr Baldwin gesticulating with a pistol loaded with blanks and firing the gun within close proximity to camera operators, the AFP news agency reported.

He was also seen asking Ms Gutierrez-Reed why she didn't have more weapons ready.

After the director called "cut", he said: "One more! One more! One more! Right away! Let's reload!"
He was also heard saying: "We should have two guns and both we're reloading."

Firearms expert Bryan Carpenter, a prosecution witness, said Ms Gutierrez-Reed should not have allowed herself to be hurried.

"Rushing with firearms and telling someone to rush with firearms is not normal nor accepted," he told the court.
"In a situation like that, when you're getting rushed to that extent, that's when safety starts to fall by the wayside."

Asked about footage of Mr Baldwin showing crew members how he would hold the gun, Mr Carpenter replied: "He's using the weapon as a pointing stick."

Geez. Never wave a gun, loaded or unloaded, around and never, ever, point it at anyone or anything you don't intend to shoot.

It should have been as inert and harmless as a stick. It’s a prop.
