Weird, everything I've seen and read about them tell me otherwise.I don't think the production team HATE Star Trek (though it's no secret Moonves does) I just think they don't CARE about Star Trek and have been brought on board to create a generic sci-fi cashgrab for CBS
What is the First Order? Where did they come from? Where is the Republic? Why doesn't the Republic have an army? Why are the Republics forces so tiny and called "The resistence"? how does the first order have so many resources? What the hell is Snoke? How did Snoke create this giant military force in secret that is easily able to take over the galaxy? How did the First Order take over the galaxy when their main base of operations along with most of their forces were destroyed in TFA? Why would Luke so radically change? Wasn't Luke exploring old Jedi temples, how does this fit with TLJ characterisation? Why did Luke leave a map if he never wanted to be found? Why wouldn't Luke even help his sister? Why does Luke not even care for Han and Chewie?
Source? I'd love to know where you got this excellent insider knowledge. That STD has degenerated into a marketing-driven, generic cash grab is pretty obvious. No one in a real decusion-making capacity at CBS cares, and the producers have their marching orders.

I'd like to know how CBS and the show snuck this piece of casting news by us back when they first brought him in and filmed his scene from the Season 1 finale.
The same way they snuck by every other non-regular that appeared on the show?
Was Clint Howard even announced beforehand?

Never heard of this Sprang guy until a few days ago, myself.Alan Van Sprang is a fairly major name, especially on TV, and, even if CBS didn't put out an official casting announcement, someone somewhere likely would've found out about his casting, so unless CBS forced media outlets to sign NDAs, * some * word of his casting should have gotten out, even if we didn't know what role he was going to be filling.
Re: Clint Howard, I believe the folks at TrekToday (the site associated with this board) posted news about his guest spot before it happened, but I could be wrong.
But why not have higher standards? I want deep philosophical musings on the human condition. They are more enjoyable and entertaining. I have very limited attention to spare for things that are "kind of dumb." Entertainment shouldn't mean turning your brain off.I don't think Star Wars is perfect and good (in fact, it is kind of dumb) nor is DISCO. But, they are enjoyable and entertaining. That's what they are supposed to be, not deep philosophical musings on the human condition.
On this I agree with you. But don't you see how this kind of creative boldness is pretty much the antithesis of the "just provide basic entertainment for as many people as possible" approach you've advocated in other posts?I agree with most of your larger points, but this one stuck out. I genuinely feel that this is most important aspect. I want new things, even if it fails. I would rather it try and fail, than simply continue on.
Excellent questions all. To the extent that JJ Abrams was responsible for the basic setup of things in TFA, though, I'm not surprised... his MO, as also demonstrated in ST09, is to take the story from point A to point B by the most direct and obvious route, without worrying whether it makes sense along the way (with points A and B defined by plot and character beats that are simple and familiar to the audience).Disney's Star Wars films literally don't make any sense whatsoever...

It has? When? Where? By whom? It certainly wasn't answered on screen. All of that has been answered.
It is? Since when? For what? Granted I don't watch quite as much TV as I used to, but I've genuinely never heard of him before.Alan Van Sprang is a fairly major name, especially on TV...
Peter Mensah - a paratrooper in The Wrath of Achilles and Alan in Emancipation (EFC), Daniel Greaves in Demons and Terra Prime (ENT)I remember Bruce Gray playing Surak...but who were those other people?
Seriously? The guy's biggest claim to fame is that he was the villain in Earth Final Conflict's universally hated fifth season.Alan Van Sprang is a fairly major name, especially on TV,

Sorry, I've taken part in a lot of threads with the other ten people who watched it. I'm used to that perspective. It usually breaks down, there's about four who only like the first season, another four who enjoy seasons 2-4 but prefer season 1, and I'm one of the three who prefer seasons 2-4 over season 1. The only thing we all agree on is that season 5 is trash. Two things:
- "Universally hated fifth season" suggests that seasons two through four had fans?
- How can it be "universally hated" when most people never saw five minutes of the fucking series?
