Spoilers Alan Van Sprang officially joins Season 2 as...

The Last Jedi is one of those movies I loved, then got home and was told by the internet I was completely wrong to have done so:rommie:

Never trust the hive mind of the Internet.
The majority of the Internet is not made up of "the majority" of people, but by the few people that have the most time to spend on the Internet. AKA not necessarily the brightest of the bunch...

They spring to the most obvious solutions and conclusions when trying to find something they don't like to blame on. People still hate the joystick in Star Trek: Insurrection. Despite "a joystick" actually being one of the most efficient controls for a 3D environment. Heck, U.S. submarines use X-Box controllers! Because people don't need a lot time getting trained on them. Or "Wrath of Khan" for the Federation mixing up/losing track of planets in a remote star system. Any idea how difficult it is to keep track of all planets in OUR sun system? We're still not sure if we found them all! It's damn hard to find dark rocks in black space.

'The Last Jedi' was the movie for me that made me give up on the Disney Star Wars movies. I'm not going to bother with Solo. But not because of fan-butthurt on the Internet. But because it's the best and most creative of the new Disney Star Wars movies. And I already had seen every single scene of the entire movie before slightly different in another Star Wars movie: The throne room betrayal, the Falcon chase, the battle of Hoth... It was the exact same things, only slightly altered. And that was the MOST creative one of the new movies... I just got tired of seeing a hopeless rebellion with a sole desert orphan becoming a Jedi fighting against stormtroopers and TIE-fighters, flying on the Millenium Falcon to defeat planet-destroying superweapons... I liked that they dared to do some audacious things with the old characters. But overall, it was just exactly the same as everything before. It's total creative bancruptcy. I'm just tired of it.

The same I'm just tired of Section 31. Of a Federation-klingon war being WWII in space, of the Mirror universe. I'd be happy to see all those things in small doses. But now it feels like that's all there is anymore. And it's just not worth it for me.

I'm looking forward to Solo because I like the character, the movie doesn't have to pull much freight other than be a really fun ride - like the original Star Wars - and because the Jedi themselves bore my ass to tears and since Lucas revived the thing with The Phantom Hope their depressing asses have dominated the series. Liked Rogue One a lot, largely because it was more-or-less Jedi-free.

"Majority on the Internet?" Who cares, but certainly audience reaction at places like Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes will tell you a lot more about how something's being received than their Critics Rating - or than conversation on dedicated fan sites like this one, for that matter.

I don't think the production team HATE Star Trek (though it's no secret Moonves does) I just think they don't CARE about Star Trek and have been brought on board to create a generic sci-fi cashgrab for CBS
Weird, everything I've seen and read about them tell me otherwise.

What is the First Order? Where did they come from? Where is the Republic? Why doesn't the Republic have an army? Why are the Republics forces so tiny and called "The resistence"? how does the first order have so many resources? What the hell is Snoke? How did Snoke create this giant military force in secret that is easily able to take over the galaxy? How did the First Order take over the galaxy when their main base of operations along with most of their forces were destroyed in TFA? Why would Luke so radically change? Wasn't Luke exploring old Jedi temples, how does this fit with TLJ characterisation? Why did Luke leave a map if he never wanted to be found? Why wouldn't Luke even help his sister? Why does Luke not even care for Han and Chewie?

All of that has been answered.

That STD has degenerated into a marketing-driven, generic cash grab is pretty obvious. No one in a real decusion-making capacity at CBS cares, and the producers have their marching orders.

Georgiou working for Section 31? I can believe they would recruit her. Yup. Whether this turns out to be a positive development depends on what the show does with the premise. If she is only working for her own benefit, that's less interesting than wondering if she is doing something on behalf of Section 31 and whose interests they are serving at the moment. She could be an awesome recurring character if the writers don't fuck it up.

You mean Leland Stottlemeyer, captain from Monk?

Seriously, it´s no surprise, given the theme of ethics vs. ruthlessness that S31 will be featured after all.

I'd like to know how CBS and the show snuck this piece of casting news by us back when they first brought him in and filmed his scene from the Season 1 finale.

The same way they snuck by every other non-regular that appeared on the show?

Was Clint Howard even announced beforehand?

Alan Van Sprang is a fairly major name, especially on TV, and, even if CBS didn't put out an official casting announcement, someone somewhere likely would've found out about his casting, so unless CBS forced media outlets to sign NDAs, * some * word of his casting should have gotten out, even if we didn't know what role he was going to be filling.

Re: Clint Howard, I believe the folks at TrekToday (the site associated with this board) posted news about his guest spot before it happened, but I could be wrong.

Never heard of this Sprang guy until a few days ago, myself.

I don't think Star Wars is perfect and good (in fact, it is kind of dumb) nor is DISCO. But, they are enjoyable and entertaining. That's what they are supposed to be, not deep philosophical musings on the human condition.
But why not have higher standards? I want deep philosophical musings on the human condition. They are more enjoyable and entertaining. I have very limited attention to spare for things that are "kind of dumb." Entertainment shouldn't mean turning your brain off.

I agree with most of your larger points, but this one stuck out. I genuinely feel that this is most important aspect. I want new things, even if it fails. I would rather it try and fail, than simply continue on.
On this I agree with you. But don't you see how this kind of creative boldness is pretty much the antithesis of the "just provide basic entertainment for as many people as possible" approach you've advocated in other posts?

Disney's Star Wars films literally don't make any sense whatsoever...

What is the First Order? Where did they come from? Where is the Republic? Why doesn't the Republic have an army? Excellent questions all. To the extent that JJ Abrams was responsible for the basic setup of things in TFA, though, I'm not surprised... his MO, as also demonstrated in ST09, is to take the story from point A to point B by the most direct and obvious route, without worrying whether it makes sense along the way (with points A and B defined by plot and character beats that are simple and familiar to the audience).

It's not that Abrams doesn't love Star Wars... I have no problem believing that he does. It's just that he's got an established creativde wheelhouse, and it has limitations.

Same goes for the people making DSC. I figure Hanlon's Razor applies here... no need to attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by incompetence.[/QUOTE]

All of that has been answered.
It has? When? Where? By whom? It certainly wasn't answered on screen.

It is? Since when? For what? Granted I don't watch quite as much TV as I used to, but I've genuinely never heard of him before.

I remember Bruce Gray playing Surak...but who were those other people?
Peter Mensah - a paratrooper in The Wrath of Achilles and Alan in Emancipation (EFC), Daniel Greaves in Demons and Terra Prime (ENT)
Larissa Laskin - Heather North in Motherlode and Trapped by Time (EFC), Calla in Cogenitor (ENT)
Bruce Gray - Edward Gale in Sins of the Father (EFC) Surak in The Awakening (ENT). Also Admiral Chekote in Gambit (TNG) and The Circle (DS9)
Steven Allerick - Safe House Volunteer in Crackdown (EFC) and Cook in The Crossing (ENT)

Seriously? The guy's biggest claim to fame is that he was the villain in Earth Final Conflict's universally hated fifth season.

Yeah never heard of him myself. Turns out he was Sir Francis Bryan in The Tudors but even looking at the picture of him and knowing that I don't recognise him

Two things:

  1. "Universally hated fifth season" suggests that seasons two through four had fans?
  2. How can it be "universally hated" when most people never saw five minutes of the fucking series?

Sorry, I've taken part in a lot of threads with the other ten people who watched it. I'm used to that perspective. It usually breaks down, there's about four who only like the first season, another four who enjoy seasons 2-4 but prefer season 1, and I'm one of the three who prefer seasons 2-4 over season 1. The only thing we all agree on is that season 5 is trash.
