Kim was in no way qualified to be Chief Engineer, even by the 7th season (his work on several specific projects notwithstanding). Without B'Elanna, I'd have put Joe Carey and Vorik through a series of examinations and simulations to see which of them consistently managed to deal with a variety of situations both mundane and catastrophic emergencies, and picked the winner (making the other one his deputy). Cross-train Harry and see where that might lead.
In fact, everyone should have been cross-training at some point, so having the Doctor training Tom made sense.
That said, B'Elanna would have made a terrible First Officer.
Anyone who annoys me with this first-name stuff in a presumptuous way gets told to address me as "Miss ______".
There are some fanfic writers who are actually talented enough to do C/7 stories in which Chakotay isn't boring. At least if you count making copious meals of pasta and veggies as not boring (was it ever established in canon that he's vegetarian? I don't remember).
I had an argument with one of these fanfic writers as to what "made from scratch" really means. As someone who grew up on an acreage with gardens and a strawberry bed, "from scratch" means real ingredients that came out of the ground, off a tree or vine, or that used to be part of an animal. It does not mean replicated. She disagreed, and I pointed out that in her story, she had Chakotay, Seven, and Mezoti (Mezoti never left the ship in this story and Seven adopted her) move into a house with a huge back yard. With Chakotay's love of working with his hands and cooking with vegetables, why not have him plant a garden and really get meals made from scratch? It would be one more father-daughter thing he and Mezoti could share.
I think you do a disservice to the male crewmembers, or at least the major characters. Yes, they found Seven attractive. But they also realized that in many ways, she was emotionally even younger than Naomi.There are a lot of famous frauds, but one of my favorites is this guy -
I suppose its all how you look at it. Chakotay quite obviously is flirting with Janeway for at least half the show's run. He leans in close, talks in a half-whisper (and YES, when he calls her 'Katherine', he says in such a way that it would be creepy AF if Bones said 'Jim' that way LOL) Then she looks a dude in the eye (who everyone on the ship - including her - was friends with) and orders him killed, and Chakotay was like, "let me rethink my goals here". He should have known this was something amiss when she had squishy fish babies with Paris (she planned that all along, or do you think starship captains always go to penal colonies looking for new crew?)
But Seven being an Ice Queen? "Harry, are you attracted to me? Okay, lets have some human-style intercourse... I can use the practice". The poor girl had the inability to see through a compliment the way a grown woman would, severe mommy/daddy and abandonment issues, and a strong desire to just be liked. Oh yeah... VERY easy pickings. Hell, even an old, bald, holographic doctor got to break-off a piece. You know what they say... "Borg Girls are easy". LMAO
If you're writing fanfiction, you can do whatever you want with the character. Just mark it AU and get on with the story.
I'm trying and failing to remember who died and came back. Are you talking about the original series from the '70s, the second series (I never saw that one), or the American series?
They harmed the character when they dropped the Maquis angle. Early Chakotay was great (his relationship with Seska and the Maquis trainees) but by Season 3 he was completely neutered.
Well we couldn't have him and Janeway getting hot n' steamy, could we? Only way to stop that was to basically neuter him.
In "Workforce" Neelix tells Kim that Chakotay is vegetarian. In "Waking Moments" Chakotay said he refused to hunt deer with his father but he didn't say that he's vegetarian. I'm sure there's an episode early in the show where he says he's vegetarian but I can't remember which one.
Isn't that against The Doctor's code of medical ethics?

I grew up in the 80s. LICENSE TO DRIVE was a fun movie. Cool song, too. I think I even did it at karaoke once long ago.
I try to stay as close to "canon" as possible, just to make the stories more realistic and accepted.
But I might do an exception for Carey.
