The DSC uniform metallic trim was like these braids - gold for command and silver for science, but bronze for ops/security, not red chrome like this. So yeah, they changed it again.

One could say they’re like the TOS pilots. The ones in DSC are bars like the KT ones, not braids like TOS. Their colour also seems to match the department (except Science which is silver), but that could just be a reflection

Why not? They look better than the TOS braids and are a lot more visible.
Impossible. One could say they’re like the TOS pilots.![]()
Head canon would say, there was a distinction between Starfleet and MACOs - so Starfleet was closer to NASA, and then both merged at some point after United Earth helped form the FederationThe TNG pip match US Navy rank markers more or less, I wonder why the TOS or at least the DSC Enterprise sleeve stripes do not match the same way. With Captain = 4 full stripes.
I think the thought behind it, production wise, was to keep it visually simple. The TNG pip match US Navy rank markers more or less, I wonder why the TOS or at least the DSC Enterprise sleeve stripes do not match the same way. With Captain = 4 full stripes.
Originally, TOS was only going to have "Captain" and "Lieutenant" and "Crewman." In that instance, it was similar to Robert Heinlein's "Space Cadet" with "officers, junior officers and cadets" as part of the Solar Patrol, rather than the more packed ranks of the Space Marines. The TNG pip match US Navy rank markers more or less, I wonder why the TOS or at least the DSC Enterprise sleeve stripes do not match the same way. However, from the pilots to airing it was decided to add more distinction, with the broken braid highlighting other grades. But, I believe captains in the pilots had two stripes, and junior officers had one, and then it was changed. So, it was not meant to be in line with the USN.
Well, it started out odd...Yeah, the TOS ones were more confusing. But they seem to have changed the stripes for SNW, so why not line up with the Navy the way TNG did? IDK, I'm really not that bovvered, it just seems odd.

Thank you. I knew I should have looked that up.The first pilot had all officers with the single stripe.

Thank you.The Interplanetary Patrol in Space Cadet had officers and cadets. The cadets were students at the space academy but after a certain point in their training also served aboard active patrol ships. The officer ranks identified were commodore, captain, commander, lieutenant and sublieutenant.
The first pilot uniforms had one solid stripe, one not-solid stripe (like a ladder) or no stripe. The ladder stripe was worn by the character identified in the script as a chief petty officer. To speculate on the intent, it may have been the three broad uniform divisions of the 20th century US Navy: officers, chiefs (enlisted who dress like officers) and other enlisted.
That white uni gave me a flashback to the infamous FASA TNG Officer's Manual, which had white uniforms for enlisted crew, IIRC.Just the talk about giving each division it's own colours - and green is the unused colour
More muted if you prefer

I noticed this last season and kept thinking: "oh they should change these", only to see it verbalized by Gersha during the panel, then surprise! New unis.
Gorgeous uniforms...f'ing gorgeous.
