Agents of SHIELD: Season 3 - Discussion (SPOILERS LIKELY)

That it even got a third season probably confirms a fourth season, for syndication purposes. That's probably all it's gonna get, though.

I hope it gets more seasons. Its the second best hero show around (after The Flash), and its not like there is any Marvel show that could replace it. If AoS doesn't get enough of an audience for, say, a 5th season, then there is no way that Mockingbird spin off will (and Agent Carter seems to have tanked in the ratings, so its not like they could use it as a replacement).

I think it's a safe bet the show will get renewed for at least another season, but since Marvel's doing rather well with its Netflix shows, maybe they'll decide to drop out of network TV altogether at some point.

But, you'd think Marvel/Disney would want a TV show on a TV network, where it can use it (at least partially) as promotion for the MCU. Netflix is fine, but its not really a place to get new or more casual viewers into Marvel's stuff, especially the audience who probably aren't into the R-rated style of Daredevil/Jessica Jones/etc. Disney also owns ABC, so it makes sense to put a show on a network they own to promote movies they're making. You could argue the movies don't need the promotion, but still it seems like that's at least some of the idea behind making AoS in the first place.

^^
I think the idea behind AoS was to milk the popularity of MCU to boost viewership to ABC, not the other way round. So if the shows aren't a ratings success I don't think they'll keep them on just for the sake of having them.

The ratings that it gets are fine given that it's one of the most-coveted timeslot of the week and it holds it's own against the NCIS machine. AoS is never going to win the time-slot and ABC knows that. But it brings in enough viewers for ABC to make money on the time-slot and that's all that really matters to ABC.

Still, the shakeup at ABC makes me a bit more worried about SHIELD than I was. We can definitely kiss Agent Carter good-bye, unless she gets moved to Netflix-- but she doesn't really fit their dark & gritty preferences.

Why shouldn't they do more diverse shows? Also Netflix has The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Doesn't get more coloful and fluffy light than that. :)

I'm not really familiar with Netflix, I just know their Marvel shows are 'dark.' I hope you're right. I think Marvel is pretty proud of Agent Carter, so maybe they will want to keep it going.

I just wish it overlapped more with the rest of the MCU. Maybe an Ant-Man sighting, or a young Dr. Whitehall stirring up trouble, they could mention Zola, or maybe they can finally make the SSR Shield aready.

Elizabeth Henstridge has confirmed that the entity possessing Ward is the MCU version of Hive
.

Yeah, but it's also got no stars (even B-list like Atwell, and that's no knock on her), and it's not a period show - those things cost.

So? That doesn't have anything to do with the style, and plenty of Netflix's other shows have had stars at least at Atwell's level, if not bigger. They've also done at least one period show, Marco Polo, and that probably costs a lot more than Agent Carter would.

So, it's not inconceivable that Netflix would pick up Agent Carter, but due to the costs involved, neither Kimmy Schmidt (fairly cheap, no stars) nor Marco Polo (lots of nudity, attempted broad international/Asian appeal) are very compelling reference points.

Well, obviously the solution is to add lots of nudity to Agent Carter. I'd be willing to bite the bullet and accept that compromise...

It's not inconceivable, and I doubt it's too expensive, but Netflix already has a roster of 5 original Marvel series, I'm not sure they'd be interested in more.
