Agents of SHIELD: Season 3 - Discussion (SPOILERS LIKELY)

I'm wondering if they don't want to use SWORD because they aren't up to the level of technology that SWORD uses, like a huge satellite base and spaceships?

They probably can't use SWORD because it originated in an X-Men comic (even though, ironically, it was created by Joss Whedon).

Daisy and Mack make a good team. And Daisy seems to be looking hotter than usual this year. That was quite a nice little superhero battle they had at the hospital with the funny-looking man.
The "funny looking man" is Lash.

Oh, okay, thanks. I thought Lash was that guy with the whip.

By the way, nobody probably got it, but "funny-looking man" was a callback to Not Brand Echh. :rommie:

Well, it was a cute moment when she did the ballistics gel test and scared the piss out of everybody in the lab...

Speaking of whom, isn't it time we got introduced to some of those other people in the Playground's lab section? If Agents of SHIELD is about the "red shirts" of the MCU, we need to meet the support staff backing up our heroes.

The amount of regulars is as big as it is already, if the show gave every lab tech his own speaking role and background the show would do nothing else than introduce characters.

With "Red Shirts" they meant the guys in the suits and black SUVs that you see occasionally pop up besides the Avengers or Iron Man.. the guys who clean up afterwards or who provide the flashy main superhero with information they need to progress in their storyline. It's not about the even smaller guy in this big organization though they moved away from the base street level stuff from season 1 and are embracing the comic superhero genre full on.

Maybe they should have another spin-off - Support Staff of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Count me as another one who really liked the start of season three, feels like it has a better balance to it this time around. Think they've finally found their groove.

Why not HAMMER then?

Probably because they've already used Hammer Industries in IM2. It'd be confusing. Plus like I said, they're probably building up to SWORD being a more permanent thing later on down the line.

So far as I can tell, the ATCU is a purely US Gov agency, while SHIELD seems to have always been a multi-national organization, presumably established in parallel with NATO. I think if it comes to it, SWORD should be an independent agency like SHIELD.

Why not HAMMER then?

Well, for one thing, there was already an Easter-egg reference to HAMMER on a background screen in "The Hub" in season 1, so it presumably already existed then and was known to SHIELD. The ATCU was newly formed in response to the Inhuman threat and was unknown to SHIELD until this week.

Besides, HAMMER was founded by Norman Osborn to advance his evil agendas. While the ATCU was set up to look evil at first, we learned by the end of the episode that it's more ambiguous.

Well by that logic SWORD already exists too as that's also shown up in some on screen graphics and IIRC a deleted scene from Thor as well.

Well not too ambiguous considering Price told Coulson she didn't have a problem with SHIELD killing Inhumans, she had a problem with them sheltering Inhumans.

Thats doesn't exactly scream good guy.

^Doesn't scream "bad guy" either. Ergo: ambiguous.

Not minding that SHIELD are knocking off potential alien threats is just being pragmatic. Cold, but pragmatic. By contrast Hydra would be annoyed because they'd want them alive to experiment on and turn into an asset. Which, incidentally, is precisely what Price is afraid SHIELD is doing with the live one.

I liked this episode a lot more than the first one.

I'm glad they got Simmons back, it will be interesting to see how her stuff works out as the season goes along. The asgardian was interesting, I'm glad we got to see him again (it makes me want to see him meet Sif). May's stuff dragged a bit, but it wasn't bad. Overall, this was a very good episode.
