Age of kirk and spock

Are kirk and spock about the same age in this film, or is the clips between iwoa and vulcan a little missleading.

Vulcans have a long life span, but I don't know if that means their childhood is also protracted.

Schoolboy Spock looked young; but T'Pol looked young, and she was decades older than she appeared to humans. So, tough to say.

i know spock, in ther other tmeline served onboard with pike 13or 11 yrs before kirk took command, and i'm guessing he spent at least 4 yrs at academy.

I recall the writers of the Trek Encyclopedia made them the same age like Shatner and Nimoy, but I never agreed with that choice.

in the original timeline, Kirk and Spock are similar in age. both in their mid-thirties. I am not sure about this one, but it's fair to say they're also of similar age here (Kirk is 25, Spock maybe 26 in earth years). remember, Kirk is an older cadet. McCoy is older than both of them, so is Scotty. Uhura and Sulu are the same age (perhaps 22). and Chekov is 17.

So when kirk was in command of the prime enterprise, he was 31, and 11 ys ago spock served with pike which made him about 20.

Spock might have been a bit older than Kirk, but essentially, the idea I got from the Cage was that he was very young. he acted like a very young Vulcan too, don't you think?

and if Chekov can be on the Enterprise (in this timeline) at 17, Spock can be on the Enterprise (under Pike in the original timeline) at 20. he was a phenomenon right from the start. a scientific doogie howser maybe? ;)

also, how do we know that Spock in this timeline hasn't served on a ship yet? how'd he get to be Pike's XO on the maiden voyage of the Enterprise without at least some space-faring experience?

(of course, we're all excusing the storylines here)

I agree and makes sense , that pike has a eye for talented young crew, who can sevre on his ships if peoeple like chekov and spock are picked.

yep. it makes perfect sense that Pike may have picked Spock out at a very young age and had him as part of his crew on other ships.

I remember in "The Enterprise Incident" Spock said he served in Starfleet for 18 years. Assuming he was 21 when he was commissioned that would make him 39, and 40 if he was 22.

Kirk was 32 when he assumed command of the USS Enterprise, which would give him approximately 10 to 11 years of service with Starfleet. At the end of the five year mission he would be around 37.

If the statement by Captain Robau about the stardate being "2233, 4", means April 2233, it would indicate James T. Kirk was born in April 2233.

Spock, therefore is older than Kirk...

And this assumes Spock was commissioned at the age of 21 or 22. I suppose he could have theoretically been commissioned earlier if Starfleet has an OCS program, if you finish college early (say 20) to my knowledge you can go through there, get a commission should you pass and everything.

But he could have been commissioned after 21 or 22, for example if he had other academic persuits before joining the Academy.

Spock decided to join Starfleet after he turned down the Vulcan Science Academy post. At what age would he be accepted into that? It's the highest professional organization in their culture; so I'm think it might take more preparation. Then he would need a little time at Starfleet Academy, too.

Jeri,

In the original timeline, did Spock attend the Vulcan Science Academy
Dialogue from "Journey to Babel" indicates that he did not:

KIRK: Mister Spock. A moment, if you please.
SPOCK: Yes, Captain?
KIRK: Explain the computer components.
SAREK: I gave Spock his first instruction in computers, Captain. He chose to devote his knowledge to Starfleet instead of the Vulcan Science Academy.
SPOCK: If you will excuse me, Captain. (leaves)
KIRK: I'm sorry, Ambassador. I did not mean to offend. I thought that
SAREK: Offence is a human emotion. I'm returning to my quarters. Continue, my wife. (leaves)

^^LoL
I always sort of assumed that Vulcans, with their long life spans, would be like Hobbits with their majority at 30. Young T'Pau in ENT, being 32, sounded quite young to be a big leader to me. But Vulcans are more industrious than Hobbits. Their education will be more efficient. So graduation and majority at a young enough age. However, we can imagine a higher minimum age for political appointments, for instance.

Well, there is a deleted scene from the beginning of the movie showing the birth of Spock so it seems the intention of the filmmakers was that Kirk and Spock be roughly the same age.
