After TOS, how much of the galaxy would be off limits or under guard?

JT Perfecthair

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Here is a list, in sort of episode order, of places that I feel the Federation would have to guard, protect, or deny access to any species from visiting either for safety reasons or to protect the discoveries that a certain visiting starship uncovered:

  • Talos 4
  • The galactic barrier. I would think all races would be sending their ESP experts to the Barrier to get some silver contact lenses and become a god. It would have to be prevented unless the Feds are sending people there too. Which I bet they are.
  • anywhere near Charlie Evans
  • the planet with the ore that splits you into 2 people in the transporter
  • both Dr Korbys planet and Mudd, rogue android warning
  • Miri's duplicate earth, bio-hazzard alert
  • the border with the First Federation, maybe Balok is not done testing yet
  • the Shore Leave planet. How long before somebody has the "random" thought to kill everyone on the planet?
  • Trelane's area of space. If Trelane taught someone how to make his machine, wouldn't they be as dangerous as someone who had spent time on Talos 4?
  • near the Gorn border, Cestus 3 area
  • Landru's society as well as Sigma Iotia, Gamma Trianguli 6, Capella 4, Omega, Neural: cultural contamination repair in effect, or cultural contamination continuing depending on your point of view.
  • Zeon and Ekos, seriously do you think humans would ever be safe or welcome there again after John Gills help and assistance?
  • Ceti Alpha 5. No wait, 6. No wait, 5. Whatever.
  • Is it safe to go to Emeniar now or did they just switch to a real war that needs to be kept away from?
  • The Spore planet, because in the 23rd century happiness is something you take a phaser to, only hardship is good for the species.
  • The Organian homworld. If in fact they were actually ever there, they clearly did not want anybody returning.
  • Lazarus home world. Would you ever take the chance that there wasn't something else hidden there that could reopen the portal and let the Lazarii back out?
  • The Guardian of Forever. Wow, talk about something needing to be behind a rope. You can change history with it, alter timelines, go back and invest in Microsoft in 1980 and take over the planet. Hopefully a whole fleet of ships protects that place.
  • Anyplace still inhabited by the flying Perogies after Deneva, Its unlikely those things moved en masse from one colony to the next but rather spread out along the way between colonies. They might even be fairly common in some areas.
  • Apollos homeworld. Could you ever be sure the "gods" were gone, maybe there was more than just his temple at work there and he could return to try and get another ship. At least that god knew what he wanted with a starship. Laurels, bitch!
  • How many systems did Nomad destroy? Were there any survivors and did they also figure out Nomads origins? Are Humans wanted for crimes against entire species in some parts of the galaxy?
  • Halka was just the first time the Mirror universe was encountered, there was nothing specific about the place itself so it may not be guarded. However, after Halka, would there not be mass response to any incursion by Mirror universe forces appearing in the "real" universe? I think Starfleet would view Mirror Starfleet as being as big a threat as any Romulan just appearing in front of them.
  • Was there just one Companion or do they wander that area of space kidnapping people to take care of?
  • Any planet in the path of the comet with ability to age people
  • The home of the vampire cloud creatures, and anyplace along their migration routes or spawning grounds
  • Sargons world, there must be endless tech there its best nobody finds
  • The Roman planet, now there is a group that would do absolutely anything to get advanced tech, that whole system must be under wraps
  • Sigma Draconis, the Great Teacher could be very useful or dangerous. As could the library of the Fabrini on Yonada.
  • The Gorgan is still in that cave, and can still be summoned by anybodys kids at a distance
  • The Tholian border, not a fun bunch, and the area of spatial interphase where travelers can lose their ship or their marbles
  • Parmen's group as they are dangerous and because humans can also learn the power. I bet it replaced Argelius a haven for sex tours though.
  • Gideon is clearly a place with some issues, though they did keep the Emenian disintegration booth industry going after the war.
  • Any more Kalandin outposts that are still guarded by their computers
  • Mr Flints planet. There is a man who knows all the secrets of the species, would we demand he tell us all he knows or would he demand that we stay away?
  • The rock creatures that created Lincoln will presumably keep doing that
  • There is a machine that can swap the minds of a person into another body, male to female even. And get Shatner to buff his nails on screen. I think that would be guarded or dismantled.
And that's what one ship found, what did the other dozen starships encounter we never heard of? I think eventually there would be a huge fleet of ships needed just to keep your enemies or your own people from exploiting or getting hurt by all that you've discovered.

Re: After TOS, how much of the galaxy would be off limits or under gua

I`m kinda thinking you dont really like Star Trek at all do you ?

Re: After TOS, how much of the galaxy would be off limits or under gua

I was around for the original broadcasts, met and corresponded with some of the cast not just as a fan but as friends. Nice try.

I think that was sarcasm, JT - your knowledge of the series makes it pretty obvious that it wasn't true. :)

Re: After TOS, how much of the galaxy would be off limits or under gua

Most of these are pretty good points, really. Although the ore planet could just be marked as "shuttles only, no transporters, and make sure you wear your thermals."

Several of those planets really ought to be off limits regardless because the people are pre-warp-- but all our debates on the Prime Directive haven't revealed much about how it's applied (or enforced) if you're not in Starfleet.

Could we even say Trelane was native to Gothos or was it more like a temporary sandbox his parents put him in? Also, would his machine even work without him to operate it?
If both of these are "no", then there's no point in interdicting Gothos.

By that last point I mean: if it's not actually the source of his power, then it may be a special amplifier or tool that is dependent on his power before it can do anything. If he's a Q-class being, I don't see why he'd bother using generic technology — but an immature Q-class being might need a little help with some very specialized devices.

Or, maybe Trelane likes playing with generic tech because he's "retro". He certainly is in all other ways. In that case, DANGEROUS MACHINE! INTERDICT, BABY!

And the galactic barrier: Like you say, either the Federation needs to somehow keep everyone away from it — good luck with that! More likely they need to send everyone they can, so they can keep up all the other races who are sending everyone they can. It's an ESP arms race!

Did you save any of the correspondence? Would love to see it.

Re: After TOS, how much of the galaxy would be off limits or under gua

How much of the galaxy? Well, you list 35 distinct areas of concern, and there are 3-400 billion stars in the galaxy. So that comes out to approximately zero percent.

Re: After TOS, how much of the galaxy would be off limits or under gua

  • Talos 4-Obviously still off-limits.
  • The galactic barrier-Better shielding would prevent a recurrence of the ESP powers thing.
  • Charlie Evans is with the Thaisians and is no harm to anybody, since they are keeping him in custody.
  • The magnetic ore problem? Easily solved with better transporter tech, and besides, nobody wants to go to Alfa 177 anyway.
  • Korby is gone, therefore threat neutralized; Mudd androids have been reprogrammed too well by Kirk & Co. to keep Mudd away from society.
  • Bio-hazard threat cured by Dr. McCoy, therefore no problem.
  • Balok not malevolent, therefore also no problem.
  • Kirk probably explained what the planet is to the Federation Council and Starfleet; planet probably has a million visitors by now.
  • Trelane dealt with by parents, probably has found some other planet.
  • Gorn and Federation are probably on friendly terms now.
  • Agreed with this, especially with regards to Neural & Beta 3000.
  • Zeon and Ekos probably on friendly terms with the Federation, but there is limited contact due to the rebuilding of both planets (I really think that both planets are lost Earth colonies to begin with-especially considering how similar the names of the Zeons are to traditional Jewish names-but that may be me.)
  • Khan & Co. should have been either put back into suspended animation, had their ship repaired, and it be sent to a distant system where nobody would have seen them, or Khan & Co. should have been subjected to the device used by Dr. Adams, with better personalties implanted.
  • Both planets in the system should be on the way to peace by now, especially with Ambassador Fox handling things.
  • I'll agree with you on this.
  • I'll agree with you on this as well.
  • The Lazeri are still fighting with each other all off the time.
  • My guess is, a research facility exists on the planet, with a ton of security, as shown in the episode 'In Harm’s Way' of the fan series Star Trek: Phase II.
  • I'm going to guess that the flying creatures were taken care of in the same manner as specified by Commander Spock & Doctor McCoy.
  • Apollo got the message, and stopped bugging humanity.
  • Why would humanity be blamed for what Nomad did? It was a senseless tragedy resulting from an accident.
  • I'd think that the Terran Empire would be busy tending to it's own affairs, in particular the changing circumstances caused by Mirror-Spock.
  • There was just one Companion, and it's now a human being.
  • Said comet would have been dealt with by Starfleet and destroyed.
  • Ditto for the vampire cloud creature.
  • Sargon's world is complete molten rock, a Class D planet if ever there was one, and Sargon himself is gone along with Thalassa and Henoch; plus, when all three left, so did knowledge of the technology.
  • I don't think that anybody gives a frack about going back to Magna Roma, or even making it a member of the UFP; they have a lot of growing up to do socially and technologically.
  • The Sigma Draconian tech is useless to outsiders since the Great Teacher helmet can only be used by native Sigma Draconians.
  • Nobody's going to bother with going back to the planet where the Gorgan is, I don't think.
  • Everybody in Starfleet knows how to keep away from the Tholians.
  • Agreed with you on this one, and also bet that only Starfleet ships are allowed to go there.
  • The Gideonites are probably isolationists anyway, and want time to fix and rebuild their own society.
  • All of the Kalandans are dead, and I'm willing to bet that the outpost we saw was the only one.
  • Flint is going to mind his own business, do whatever it was McCoy said he was going to do to make life better, and then die. I think that will be all that we need to see of him.
  • Agreed with you on this one, although their mental powers are great enough for them to snare passing starships even if people don't go in the general vicinity.
  • Said machine's swapping doesn't last that long, so what's the attraction of using it?

 Good point!

It's quite a can of worms. How can you really make sure that the likes of Harry Mudd, Cyrano Jones, Dr. Sevrin and religious fanatics (I mean, those are the ones we have seen roaming the galaxy without filing a reliable flight plan) do not go to places that are forbidden or considered off-limits?

I can only imagine that Starfleet and the UFP only share stellar maps with the places civilians "should" go to and keep quiet about the dangerous sites. Deviate from the established interstellar routes and you are on your own at your own risk.

Re: After TOS, how much of the galaxy would be off limits or under gua

OK, let's take this point by point.

  • Talos 4: no doubt still interdicted pending the death of every Talosian ever. YAY GENOCIDE.
  • The galactic barrier: interior & exterior are both a bunch of 廢物. I liked the explanation in "The Wounded Sky" that the exterior one was just the wavefront of a massive stellar explosion
  • I think Charlie boy's been isolated on his own.
  • Why make Alfa 177 off-limits? Just post a local advisory & be done with it.
  • No doubt both these world are under Science Council auspices.
  • The biohazard has been eliminated, thus opening up the world for UFP protectorate status.
  • As said in my reply on this stand-alone topic, Canada.
  • Negotiations were made with the caretaker, as I recall. Have him tone it down some & you're shiny.
  • Yeah, I think Trelane doesn't really have an "area" other than the corner he's been put in for a couple millenia. (Trelane may BE a baby, but he is not Baby.)
  • Obviously some sort of rapprochement has occurred, because there are colonists on Cestus III.
  • These would be no more "off-limits" to Federation personnel as they were before. The damage is done; it's either been corrected or in the process of being corrected, depending on POV.
  • See supra.
  • Why would any of the ALPHA CETI (get it right!) planets be off-limits?
  • Perhaps Robert Fox's efforts were successful & there's no need to keep away from the Eminiar system. I rather think they were.
  • This I could see being verboten pending some form of medicotechnological workaround.
  • I think the Organians would take care of themselves.
  • Pretty sure the portal's been dealt with once & for all.
  • The Guardian is most like under Science Council auspices, classified "drop dead before reading", or perhaps under the oversight of DTI (maybe even their home base?)
  • No need to keep away from the latkes of lethality. Find them & sent in the Orkin man with his UV rays.
  • This might have an eye kept on it, but just because.
  • An interesting idea, but I don't anyone trying to avoid sterilization was taking the time to find out what or who was behind the act.
  • Well, seeing as how there WAS no mirror incursion (DC Comics aside), this is rendered moot.
  • I think the implication was that there was only the one, thus its wanting Zef as a play toy.
  • Was it actually the comet, though? And wasn't it destroyed? If not, DESTROY. THE. COMET.
  • Dead, dead, dead. Irrelevant. Starfleet are not Klingon tribble hunters.
  • Again, Science Council auspices, or perhaps the Starfleet IPX guys. (Good addition to my possible special projects deal. Hmm...)
  • Prime Directive action on "Magna Roma" would most like be under the guise of "correcting" the cultural contamination only, & then protectorate status...Dvorkin novels not withstanding.
  • Science Council/SF IPX once again.
  • As I recall, if no one believed, he had no power. The power was taken away, so....
  • Obviously we've seen future relations with the Tholians some. As for the interphase, well...your transwarp theory may vary.
  • See supra, re: Apollo.
  • Gideon did get its Vegan choriomeningitis, though, so...
  • Another Science Council/IPX candidate.
  • I think he's dead. Wasn't he dying? Probably left all his ish to Federation archives & the like.
  • I can see an interdiction on Excalbia, with provisos for observation.
  • Revenge Of Science Council
Cogitation + Occam = PROFIT!

If you are causing the death of a race by actively interfering in others coming to their aid--no matter the nature of the aid, or the race's refusal to accept any but a single type of it--genocide.

Re: After TOS, how much of the galaxy would be off limits or under gua

Not really, since the Talosians demonstrated their ability to mess with minds at incredible distances/light years, so they could lure in anyone they wanted, Starfleet regs or no.

Suddenly I want to see Jerry Orbach as Papa Trelane.

You know, I don't think it was ever stated who they play baseball with (or against). Do you think there's a Gorn League?

If there is, I have an image of it being like Dib versus Shunk Wugga in the audience trials on "Invader ZIM". ("Doctor say big head not bad!")
