Trek 09 and STID didn't have a whole lot of substance to them as I recall, but that's ok.
Now don't get me wrong: I enjoy substance Trek over fluffy Trek.
That being said, make no mistake, the franchise needed rehabilitation. It totally became a nerd thing by reputation and by the 1990s, it was something to be avoided lest you be branded a, God forbid, Trekkie.
So what I liked about what Abrams did was that it made Star Trek somewhat cool again.
Why? Because Star Trek had forgotten one of its fundamental ingredients: sexy.
Without gratuitous sexiness of the 1960s and no Bill Theiss costumes, Trek lost it sexiness factor. Now, that's not the ONLY reason, but sex appeal would've helped the later shows since the writing was losing its quality.
The movies and shows also lost their oomph.
With Abrams, Trek got its mojo back.
The problem is that it's taking WAY TOO LONG between movies.
