Advice: Video Editing software?

Not sure if this is the correct place to ask, but I know there are s great many tech savvy people here who might just be able to help.

I’m about to embark on my first video project and I’m completely bewildered.

What’s a good, free, starting point for creating a short video, about a minute long, composed mostly of static images with zoom effects and panning to give some impression of motion, along with some brief video. Captions and fade effects maybe, and once I’m more adventurous, superimpose animated snow effects and the like, or would that be something else.

I’m not averse to paying for software, but as a beginner I’d like to find my feet before investing. I’m on an entry level windows laptop, 1gig ram I think.

I used WeVideo for a quick and dirty 20 second clip. It's similar to Camtasia and it got the job done.

HitFilm Express is a good free video editor. They have a paid version as well, but sounds like you only need the free version. https://hitfilm.com/

Maybe it's enough to use whatever on-board video editing capabilities the laptop came with. Windows used to come with Windows Movie Maker, which other posters may be well inclined to call shit - but it will produce a simple cut like you're describing.

Blackmagic Designs' DaVinci Resolve is a professional editor based on the DaVinci color correction software used by the film and television industry for years. They've been adding editing features and now includes Fairlight audio for enhanced audio editing/enhancing.

Best of all, there is a free version that has most of the features an individual would use. The Studio version adds features for multi user collaboration and farm rendering.

Sorry for bumping into an old conversation. There are numerous video editing apps available, each with its own set of features and user reviews. Do some research, read about the features and user experiences of various video editing programs, and consider trying out different options. This way, you can find the most suitable software for your project and have a great editing experience.
