Here's an interesting brief assessment from the Entertainment Weekly blog about the Austin showing from someone with the screen name LaureL:
So, I was there for this, and I'd never seen an episode of Star Trek in my life (a friend convinced me to go). So as an outsider, I thought the movie was pretty standard blockbuster faire, but... there was something shiningly happy about it. Of course, the set-up was pretty intensely great, so I might be biased, but I enjoyed the movie very much and would badger people into going to see it. My prediction: it gets a B from EW. I'd give it a B+.

I like that - "there was something shiningly happy about it."

That is reassuring. I like it too.

In relation to other EW grades a B doesn't seem that reassuring, esp. when Owen Gleiberman generously awarded a B- to Nemesis; although I think he was inflating the grade in order to make a statement of comparison to the even more abysmal Star Wars prequels (I & II).

On the other hand, I think he's too hard on TUC, also with a B-.

Insurrection gets a C. Lisa Schwarzbaum grades First Contact a B+. If they're grading consistently then I certainly hope they find Star Trek '09 at least as good as First Contact.

It sure sounds like A- material from the reviews I've read, with the minus mostly attributable to the inherent limitations of "origin stories."

They're not grading consistently. They make this stuff up as they go along.

From BBC Entertainment news:

Simon Pegg is on good form at Scotty. Accent is passable, if occasionally veering as little towards Brig O'Doon territory.

Best bits from the #Startrek screening were the fast-moving space fights and the little in-jokes, which won applause from the Trekkies.

But in film, as with everything, it's less what you do than how you do it, and Star Trek carries itself with immense style and heart. It benefits greatly, too, from a cast that reads like a virtual who's who of up-and-coming screen talent. Besides Pegg, Saldana, and Pine (the latter solid rather than stunning), there's also Harold and Kumar's Jon Cho (as Sulu), Bourne Supremacy hitman Karl Urban ("Bones") and, above all, Heroes villain Zachary Quinto, the straight-sets star of the movie. His Spock – who'd have thought it? – is fascinating: credibly cerebral, physically volatile, with seething undercurrents of rage. His villainous Heroes association does him no harm, but this is a rich and very different performance for which he deserves great credit.

And yet... Star Trek entertains but never electrifies. The TV show tapped into America's pioneering spirit, as Kirk and co boldly went where no weekly serial had been before. It's said Abrams (best known for the TV show Lost) was given $150million to bring Star Trek to the big screen and he's done a decent, if dutiful, job

Quinto has been a "find" for a while. given fortuitous circumstances, he can go pretty far. he needs to not get himself typecast, though. he needs a drama after this. no more sci fi for a while.

I think from interviews he has said he doubts he will get typecast, but I'd agree with you about a Drama. He has done some of that stuff before Heroes, including season 3 of 24.
