Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect food

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

Well, for what it's worth, according to the Mayo Clinic, smallpox can be spread on clothing, although the risk is slight. But this doesn't excuse the intent in Amhrrst's case.

The accusation by Ward Churchill that the U.S. Army deliberately gave infected blankets to Indians in 1837 -- and this was responsible for the smallpox outbreak -- has never been corroborated by any other historian of the period who's researched it. In fact, most historians of the period say it didn't happen. Instead, there is evidence the smallpox outbreak came from more "conventional" and "accidental" means.

The point I was trying to make is that the 1800s were not a good time for 'people of color', and if I were living then I probably wouldn't have survived very long. Especially being a 'half-breed'.

Now let's get back to talk of slaughtering whales before the topic goes astray.

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

In Iceland they call it "the red meat of the sea" and sell kabobs called "Moby Dick on a Stick." :)

Does it taste like chicken?

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

Eating endangered species may be the best thing you can do to save it. Create demand. Someone will make it their business to ensure steady supply.
How did that work for the dodo?
As I mentioned upthread, the dodo had no commercial value. Its meat tasted foul.

Until Dutch ships came to the islands off the African east coast in the late 16th century, the dodo had no natural predators. Once the islands were discovered, they were quickly overrun with feral dogs and pigs descended from escaped shipboard animals. The dodo was a slow breeder -- an evolutionary adaptation to the limited resources of its small habitat -- and built its nests on the ground, making its eggs an easy meal for those dogs and pigs. That's why it became extinct, probably by the late 17th or early 18th century.

On the other hand, the moa, a gigantic flightless bird native to New Zealand, was hunted to extinction -- by the native Maori people before Europeans ever got there.

The restaurant just apologized.

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- A trendy California sushi restaurant charged by federal authorities with serving whale meat offered an apology Monday, saying it "ignored its responsibilities" to endangered species.

Specifically, the responsibility to serve them with A-1 sauce! :)

Prosecutors charged Typhoon Restaurant Inc., the parent company of Santa Monica's The Hump, and chef Kiyoshiro Yamamoto, 45, with the illegal sale of a marine mammal product for an unauthorized purpose.

Although it is considered a delicacy in Japan and some other countries, meat from whales -- an endangered species -- is illegal to consume in the United States.

CNN story

The bolding in that last bit is mine. I had no idea that "whales" were a species, much less an endangered one. Thanks for clearing that up, CNN!

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

Well, whales are a species, and over half the whale species are listed as endangered.

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

No, whales are an order, cetacea, which is divided into two suborders, toothed whales and baleen whales, which are divided into fourteen families, which are divided into around forty genera, which are then divided into over eighty species, only around ten of which are endangered.

And the order Cetacea includes the porpoises and dolphins, which technically are just smaller, cuter whales.

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

They are NOT cuter!!!! Ask any big momma whale.

Well, he IS pretty cute. Looks just like his mama.

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

And hopefully he'll grow up big and strong and eat the evil seals that eat the cute little penguins! You'd think marine mammals and penguins would come to some kind of common understanding that the real battle is between air-breathers and tasty gill-based creatures, but seals want no part of it. That's why whales and polar bears must unite against seals to protect the interests of the larger avian/mammal alliance.

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

They just shouldn't make animals endangered, problem solved

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

That would work if extinction were invented by Walmart, but unfortunately it's been going on for over a billion years with no prospects of abating. So we might as well eat the endangered animals before they're gone forever! :)

Somehow, I got through four years undergrad and four years graduate school without taking a biology course. So excuse me. :)

According to Seaworld's site, 15 of 70 spieces of whales are endangered, though the number is debated (like should a species of endangered dolphin be on the list or not because it's not popularly thought of as a whale).

The fact one way or the other is the whale in question here, the Sei whale, is a protected species. I'm not sure what's politically incorrect about it being illegal to serve an endangered species up at a meal, however it was obtained.

To that end, the restaurant has apologized and will not fight the misdemeanor charges:

The OP called it a politically correct because he wanted to take shot at the Obama administration and skirt around the rules that would of gotten him a warning.

Yeah, they shouldn't make it illegal
